Car Scrappage Scheme

The theory behind this idea is ok, however as often seems to be the case with this Govt, if there are 2 ways to do something they will choose that which is by far the most complicated.
They initially touted this round the manufacturers with a suggested £2kfigure, in announcing it they make it £1k manufacturer subsidised, £1k Govt subsidised they will more than cover their contribution with the additional VAT that they generate from the new car sale and they will seem to be the heroes for doing so.The interesting thing was in artybird's post; the manufacturers that are still waiting to see, one wonders why, they must forsee some issues here?
because there are still a lot of unanswered questions, which until they are resolved could obviously have an impact on manufacturer's / dealer's margins0 -

Yet another stupid scheme by this totally inept government. Firstly as someone said, the sort of person who has a 10 year old car is not likely to be forking out for a new car, more likely going for second hand. and secondly, someone wants a new car, so they get hold of a totally clapped out car for a couple of hundred and trade that in, receiving the £2,000.. After the idiotic 2.5% reduction in VAT you would have thought they had run out of silly schemes, but no , watch out for the next one. Makes you wish the other lot were better, maybe they are but not a lot. I think we've all seen what politicians are really interested in0

@goldspanners - do you mean to say then that the article on Parkers.co.uk about the SORN loophole is wrong and you are right?
OLD VEHICLE- Passenger car or small van up to 3.5 tonnes
- First registered in United Kingdom on or before 31 July 1999
- Currently registered with DVLA to the registered keeper making the application, or currently on Statutory Off Road Notification (SORN)
- Current MOT test certificate
- Registered Keeper must have a UK address
- The registered keeper has been the registered keeper of the vehicle continuously for the preceding 12 calendar months before the order date of the new vehicle
...work permit granted!0 -
ive been looking at deals and i have just put my order in on a 09 honda crv, i managed to get nearly 5000 pound of the list price and they are also offering interest free, i know honda are not a uk company but these vehicles are made in swindon, by british people.
I looked at the scrappage scheme but to be honest i think it will only be off list price. I was looking to buy second hand and the model i wanted where going for about 16500 and where 2 years old, ive managed to get a brand new 09 plate for a 1000 pound more.
If you look there are some right good deals out there, just haggle i went for a test drive on sunday and when i told the dealer the price i had found the car for he could not believe it, it was quite funny because he sat behind his desk got the calculator out and i said before he started, before we continue i will tell you how much i can get it for, he did come down to within 500 pound, but it was still not enough.I am not a Mortgage AdviserYou should note that this site doesn't check my status as not being a Mortgage Adviser, so you need to take my word for it. @goldspanners, sorry I tried but this forum forbids me to post links as I am a newbie. If you follow the link you posted yourself, there is a link right there to the article I am referring to. Scroll back to the top, on the right-hand side, under Related News: 'Cash-for-Scrap Loophole'. This article appeared a few days AFTER your one, which appeared on Budget day.0

this?
basically all this means is that your trade in is just that, a trade in, not part of the scrap scheme. you could do this any day of the week....work permit granted!0 -
@goldspanners - great you found it. But I think this time it’s you that haven’t read it. Neither have you answered my question to you, which was simply whether you thought this particular article was wrong while you are right about the MOT requirement re Scrappage Scheme.
This article's 2nd bullet states, and I quote: "Car doesn't need a current MOT..." 3rd bullet goes on to say, "Old car to trade in can just be SORN." while the last sentence reads, "... anything that is unlikely to pass an MOT could still get a [sic] them £2000 off a brand new car”.
This article is entirely about the scrap scheme and obviously not a normal trade-in you could do any day of the week (read the title).
Finally there is another article on this SAME loophole on timesonline.co.uk (sorry can’t paste link, so just Google it). Is Ben Webster, Transport Correspondent for Times wrong as well about this then?0 -

ive highlighted the operative word in your post....work permit granted!0 -
I think it will be wait and see. The car manufacturers don't understand the sceme yet.
Gogdog99 you are placing a lot of faith in two journalists that might prove misplaced.0
