Now I wonder if anyone has actually given any though to what will be done with the sudden influx of scrap cars?

Where does your scrapper go, do you drop it off at the dealers (they will love that)?

Do we have the breaking capacity to deal with them and all the waste (oil, plastic etc) that will be generated? Many car breakers have closed because of the environmental problems.

The biggest issue (I imagine) would be how fast the dealers can get their £1000 from the government.

    Sorry Heather and Rinky
but you have been misinformed, whoever subscribe to the scheme have to give it on all their range of models, so also the Fiat 500 (if Fiat goes in) will have the 2000 scrappage money

Yes very true. I wouldn't like to be on the Goverments Creditors list atm. The queue is probably longer than Ms Chapmans expense claim.

with thanks to artybird for outlining all the manufacturers taking part in the Scrappage scheme (I really appreciate the work you've put in here) but, could you tell me if it's only NISSAN who are considering 8yr+ old cars, for this scheme or are any other manufacturers going to 'move' on the age thing - do you know? Does anyone know? My old Skoda is 9 years 'young'!!!

  • Not researched this but my guess would be that the actual balance to change offered by nissan won't be any different to what was on the table before.
They are just replacing the words saving or discount in their ads with the words scrappage allowance for 8yr old cars.

    Almost 100% right....

If the dealer has paid £10,350 for the trade in and sells it for £10,500 then it has made a paper profit of £150, and this is inclusive of VAT, so the actual profit for the dealer is £130.43 and £19.56 is VAT payable to HMRC at the current 15% rate.

Yes of course, I forgot to explain that bit in my sums :) Thanks for pointing it out.

The NIssan advertised offer for 8 years old cars is not the official Government scheme, infact if you read the T&C you are not obliged to scrap your old car, so it is just a discount on some models.....

Thanks Lorielan. I'll take all this into consideration over the next two days. Stacks of bedtime reading for me. How I wish I had a 10 year old banger. This would make life much easier. Thanks again to all in this thread

The dealers will be reimbursed in 10 days but sometimes the dealers don't have to pay anything as the manufacturers may deal directly with the Government
