:eek:My 15 year old Corolla meets the criteria and I have savings which would mean I could buy a new car. My car has been brilliant but I feel it just starting to have problems. The MOT runs out on 17th May!! I have to have a car for work so have to make a quick decision about whether to look into this scheme if it going to start in time or risk putting car through MOT, which could be an expense this time! Any suggestions/ ideas very welcome. I really can't decide what to pursue

Mid May could mean mid-June by the time they get their act together. I think you just need to keep your fingers crossed if you are going to try to make this work for you, get everything sorted out in advance.

Yes, having seen the May 18th date and not being able to have a period without a car (we only have the one) I think I have no choice but to try to get mine through the MOT. Oh well that has made up my mind in the short term!! If I can get it through will atleast give me more thinking time!

Hyundai Orders Up 400% In a Week After Scrappage Announcement.

Industry experts who are wondering what effect scrappage will have on car sales might want to use Hyundai as a barometer. In the first week after the announcement, enquiries at the company’s dealerships are up 400 percent, with buyers clamouring to make sure they can secure cars before stocks – or the government money – run out.

Although dealers aren’t yet allowed to take orders under the scheme officially, they are noting ‘expressions of interest’ which will allow customers to reserve cars from existing stock.

Hyundai dealers have also been supplied with a provisional scrappage price list, allowing customers to see what a new Hyundai can be expected to cost including the government and manufacturer allowances.

As expected, it is the i10 and i20 models which are attracting the most attention from buyers. An entry level i10, complete with air conditioning and the new 77bhp 1.2-litre engine, is predicted to cost just £4,995 with the scrappage allowance (£1,000 from the government, £1,100 from Hyundai). Alternatively, an i20 three-door could well be had for £5,995 (£1,000 from the government and £1,200 from Hyundai).

Tony Whitehorn, Hyundai UK’s managing director said: “It seems that a few big-name manufacturers are still prevaricating about scrappage. While they have been scratching their heads and confusing customers, we’ve been only too happy to show hundreds of potential buyers how a new Hyundai is within their reach.”

The Korean company has drawn on its experiences in the German market, where a scrappage scheme has been in place since January and Hyundai sales have leapt up by 140 percent.

Mr Whitehorn continued: “We’ve just had a delivery of 800 i10s and i20s and we will get them out to dealers in time for mid-May when the scheme is expected to go live. We expect these, and our existing stocks, to sell quickly though and so are negotiating with the factory to secure more production and keep up with the expected demand. This is a great opportunity for car buyers to move up to a cleaner, safer and more reliable new car and we don’t want to disappoint a single customer.”

I've been to two Fiat dealers today, and two Hyundai.
One hyundai dealer isn't doing the scheme for i10's. One Fiat dealer isn't happy on the Panda, and can't guarantee to get any stock.
Second Hyundai dealer has some on order, if you don't mind the colour you can have one by the end of May, or June if he has to order it. Second Fiat garage is on eight weeks delivery.
All trade in's need an MOT, and must be taken to the dealer.
No deals apart from the scrappage, and they can sell them as fast as they get them, so take it or leave it.
Booked my test drives for Saturday!

I've been looking at this and asking around dealerships, and the general consensus seems to be that they pick your old car up from you, when the new car is delivered. So no worrying about your SORN declaration :)

thats all fair and well if your getting your new car delivered to your door. but most will be collected from dealers fourcourts.

Called into two Renault dealers yesterday. The car I was looking at had a screen price of £10995.00. At the first dealer I stood in the show room for 10 mins. before a member of staff asked if I was waiting to see a sales person. On answering yes she said she would get somebody for me, after another 5 mins. of waiting I walked out. At the second dealer a sales person came over immediately, they had the same car at the same screen price in the show room. When I asked about the car I was told '' that price is a special offer on cars registered in April. If you want to use the scrappage scheme the car would be a May registration and the price would be £13495.00.''

Car dealers don't you just love em.:rotfl:

is anyone else over the new car thing???

its the most expensive thing you will waste money on and if its under £20k its probably boring and just like all the others (dont they all look the same?)

Weve got a 5 year old jag, and just bought a 10 year old FSH discovery, 7 seats for all our kids and dogs for £1200 !

Ive had a few new cars, the last an 05 shogun and after a few morons have opened doors on it, scratched the bumpers, and the kids muddied it up it might as well be 3 years old.

sorry car industry, I am not prepared to waste money on a new 6/7 seater, nor would I want to drive my kids around in a tiny tin box, they dont cater for a family of 6 do they?

UK scheme is 1/7th of the size of the German one in funding and per car the govt subsidy is half. No wonder the dealers of the least competitive brands are prevaricating.

A very British scam - by UK Govt on the UK car buying punter, methinks. For Gordon's Govt to be able to claim we have a scheme 'just like theirs', at one seventh of the funding.
