Car Scrappage Scheme

People who run 10 year old cars usually do so because thats all they can afford. They may aspire to own say a 5 year old but never a new one. They may even have to borrow money to do this.
.
Wrong. You'd be surprised at the number of people who run a 10yr old second car, or who have had their 10 yr old car from new. I can tell you there is a very healthy interest in the scrappage deals.
And what's wrong with borrowing money for a new car? Not too many people go out and buy them with cash.0 -
As of Thursday the Hyundai dealer in Eastham,Wirral had i10s for £7695 for the 1.2 comfort with a dealer contribution of £1200 leaving a balance of £5495.
I went to have a look and was quite impressed, for the money you get a fair bit of kit as standard:-air con etc. They only have them in scrap-dealer red for that price.
Have a look on the forums though,as Hyundais fuel consumption claims seem to be a bit bogus with people struggling to average 40 odd mpg.0 -

Well said I totally agree. I'm exactly in this position...0 -
Ignoring the 'warm glow' of buying a new car, rather than the real benefit of buying a nearly new car for at least 20% off the price, my real concern is that this so called green measure is nothing of the sort. If the carbon foot print was reduced by this scheme being restricted to buying a car with a maximum of the £35 VED 119co2, I would understand the logic of scrapping an old car.
The Greens tell us it costs 'the earth' to build a new car rather than keep an old one on the road. But I would overlook this inconvenient truth to see the demand on oil imports reduced and the huge strides in fuel consumption/reduced pollution from SMALL modern vehicles realised for the benefit of everyone.
I have a perfectly servicable old Volvo that will qualify for this scheme and by happy coincidence I thought of buying a new car using the scrappage allowance. However the confidence trick of just allowing this against the retail price with the sure knowledge a £1000 discount would have been secured for cash, means our taxpayer subsidised £1000 is simply sqandered on the dealer. The observation below that the VAT will go back to the Government and therefore cost the Chancellor nothing does not placate my sense of outrage that this is scrapage scheme is little more than a creative illusion.
So run your old car until it is dead, or more likely the MOT man gives you the quote from hell and it is a one way trip to the scrap yard. Then, buy another car, a 'nearly new' or a one year old from a car supermarket will secure a discount way above the scrappage allowance. And you would have done your bit for the planet by wringing as much use out of your old car that it would bear.
So lets campaign for a straight discount voucher we can use with any on-line discount supplier. Forget the main dealer and Ford's laughable interpretation. Lets be honest, we will not get more than £1000 for our old car, but if that is off of a rock bottom discount price then they can scrap my old car for the good of the planet/my wallet. But I will only buy a very low polluting model and I would support any campaign to restrict this scheme to 'green' vehicles only.

To be absolutely brutal do you really think the government gives a flying fig about online suppliers?
And to repeat yet again the Government was never really that concerned about the environment it was just a angle they tried, to win more support. They chose not to restrict the discount to the "very low polluting model" because hardly any of the cars made in this country would qualify - they were getting grief before (and they still are) about it supporting MFR's and workers outside the UK so why restrict so the UK benefits even less??0 -
going to look at a kia picanto tomorrow they are taking £2k off the list price which means the basic model will cost £4200. the funny thing is they have lots of 06 plates for sale at £4600, and my wifes 10 year old micra is now worth £900 more than i payed for it 4 years ago :T,
good times0 -
Does the new scrappage scheme mean that my 5 year old car has now gone up in value by £2000 because it will be worth that when it is a ten year old, purely for scrap? Somehow I don't think my local dealers will agree if I show interest in one opf their new cars and their part exchange offer will be as derisory as usual.0

No, the £2000 scrap thing is only a year (untill April 2010). You need to own the car for 12 months previously before trading it in.0

I think bagboy is saying they paid £1100 for it four years ago. Hence scrappage gives a supposed value of £2k to the car.0
