I bought a new Mondeo in January. RRP £20,695, I managed to get it for £15,600. Over 5k off.

Of course the wife fancies a new car now and she liked the New Ford Ka. They couldnt move much on the price of that as it was new out so will be ideal under the £2k scrappage system assuming they dont put the price up.

The only sad thing is the Focus we have only has 70k on the clock, sails though every MOT and is good on fuel. I used to work in a bodyshop so keep it up together. SO he is a pic of the 'old banger' I will be scrapping :/

    Seems a shame really !

I sell cars for Ford so would just like to make a few points. The finer details of our scrappage scheme have just been finalised and you do get existing deals plus the scrappage. One thing to note is that the dealer has to make a £275 contribution to the cost of the scheme so on some loss leader deals (e.g.deals advertised in the local paper) they may have to add the £275 on in order not to make a loss on the deal.

A lot of comments have been made about price increases and it's true that list prices increased by 4% in February and April, however the price you pay is dependant on when the car was built, not when you buy it,so you've still got a chance of getting a pre-April build Focus and Ka and there are handful of pre-April Fiesta's about,as well as plenty of pre-February Mondeo,S-Max and Galaxy, which will all be available on the scrappage scheme. Some base models (Styles and Edges) have actually had their discounts increased to shift some old stock, although you forfeit some of the finance deals on these cars, but there's nothing stopping you from paying cash or getting a personal loan.

There are some good deals about and it would be a shame if people missed out because of something they read on a forum such as this as some of the comments are at best misleading and at worst untrue.

Also, whilst I'm on my soap box,(and of course I am biased!),all this talk about buying "British built" cars,if I was a gambling man I'd place a substantial amount of money that, even though Ford don't actually build cars in the UK any more, they are resposible for employing far more people in this country than Honda ,Nissan etc and probably Vauxhall. When you take into account the size of their dealer network,Dagenham,Bridgend, the massive parts operation at Daventry, call centres and finance operations, that's an awful lot of people.

Hello peeps new poster here. I'm on the lookout for a change. My present car is a Renault Laguna Rt Sport "R" reg so I would qualify for this. It was MOT'd last week and failed and cost 185 quid in total to get it through. Car is fine..........in the warm weather as the heating or the rear window de-mister hasn't worked for 3 years so doesn't get used in the winter. Also the bonnet release is a bit iffy. I've got 7K cash and could maybe stretch to 8K so don't need any finance. Would using cash get me a bit more off? I like the look of the Toyota IQ. I've also been told that an Uncle of mine in Ireland works for Toyota. Don't know what his job is but he travels around Europe a lot. Not spoke to him for a few years so will have to have a word with him. Any as to what would be best for me? Scrappage scheme or used car? Can't see anyone wanting to buy mine privately.

Problem is once you know the person wants the scrappage £2k off, there'll be no leeway on haggling. I'll bet people who aren't scrapping can still walk away with a car the same price they would as if they were scrapping. There is of course websites like drive the deal which dealers like to spread lots of misinformation about, only to meet the same person a week later who did the deal through the website instead.

Not true, not in our dealership anyway, unless it's a loss leader and we have to add the £275 on,but even then you'd still be £1725 better off. All the scrappage monies can be reclaimed by the dealers so as far as I can see there's no reason for there to be any major price difference between scrappage and non-scrappage deals.

The cynical attitudes displayed on these forums are not going to help the manufacturers, the dealers, and most importantly the customers!

the smoke and mirrors arent going to help the buyers out either.
unfortunatly it isnt as clear cut as £2000 off. as youve said the buyer would only be getting £1725 off some ford models.
im guessing other dealers will be doing similar.

Well I'm poor and cannot afford a new car. Besides I have an N registered Rover 100 hahahaha you might all say but it has 17,000 genuine miles on the clock full service history and runs as good as any new car. Also the parts are much cheaper should it need any in the near future. Theres no way I'm scrapping my trusty steed and have you seen the price of bus fares and other forms of transport. My Rover is almost as cheap to run as my old cinquecento that only died on me cos of all the rotten speed bumps.

More like: "cynical attitudes displayed by UK Govt" when you compare the funding of this UK scheme with that of some European countries (e.g. 1/7th of the funding compared to the German scheme).

What this forum's members are doing is gradually winkling out the truth of the situation, after the previously mentioned smoke has cleared and mirrors have been moved out of the way.
