The average age of a scrap car is 13-14 years, so why would these cars be scrap in 7? I've never known a 7 year old car that's not accident damaged to be scrapped.

cheap tin from india after 7 years on our roads will be falling to bits, and when the warranty is up on these cars (presuming they come with the 7 year warranty) they will be virtually worthless anyway. they are so cheap to buy they will fall into the "£300 banger" part of thier life much quicker which puts them very close to a scrap yard.

Bit like Ladas. Most of them disappeared and lived quite a short life. Although I did see a very rare sight a few months ago, a rust free Lada Riva, with no obvious signs of welding.

i think the ladas ended up being put into container ships and headed back to russia, huge demand for them.
occasionally i see an odd nice lada riva, there was one down the road from me,an old guy had it from new,it looked as if he had just ram raided halfords with it,leapord skin seat covers, static strips, furry dice, and the best part of all was the vented rear window cover :rotfl: the guy kept it mint,i dont know where it ended up?

Yeah but not a £300 banger after 7 years, & certainly not on the scrap pile. Look at parkers for other 7 year old hyundai models.
As for India, look at what cars are now manufactured there,

Fair enough but the first problem with it needing parts could render it uneconomical to repair. much earlier than other marques.and the high price on spares (again compared to other makes) doesnt help either.

OK I agree there. Hopefully though as they are selling more & becoming more popular, pattern parts might become more widely available & cheaper. But yes, even on my ford some parts are main dealer only.

Hello there. I have just got back from the Kia garage and just wanted to check that what I was told is accurate (or are they bending the truth).

I went in to ask about the standard Picanto, £4195 with the scrappage deal. He didn't really want to sell it to me and said that there was a 3-4 month waiting list and if the scheme ends (runs out of Government funds) then the order would be cancelled. He though that the funds would run out in 4-6 weeks time. He also said that I had to pay £500 deposit now to order the car. He begrudging said that I would get the deposit back if the order was cancelled.

Now can anyone tell me if this is all correct as it sounds typical salesmans talk to me. He was obviously trying get me to buy the more expensive model.

    Thanks in advance.

I just ordered a Picanto last Saturday. First dealer said no movement on £4195, as I expected to be honest, would be able to place the order now with a £100 deposit to take delivery end of May or first week in June at the latest.

Went to next Kia dealer to compare their offers - was told it would be 12-14 weeks delivery, and would need a higher deposit than £100 (though he didn't say what) - oh yes, and apparently I could have the base model in yellow, no problem. As the base model doesn't come in yellow and the man was a complete muppet we left.

Went back to the first dealer, ordered the car, trade-in/scrappage forms completed showing they're paying £2000 for my 11 year old Saxo. Estimated delivery date on order shows as 31/5/09.

One new Picanto (in white), a full tank of petrol, car tax for a year, a free valet every year for life, and free MOT's for life - for £4195.

    I don't think that's a bad deal.

So you don't necessarily get the same service and offers at all dealers - shop around if you can, it's worth it.

Thanks Artybird. I think I am confirming my order tomorrow. White one as well. That seems to be the only colour. Did you negotiate the Tank of fuel, valet and MOT's or were they offered to you from the start?

The full tank of fuel was a bit of an extra (they usually put £10 worth in, full tank is about £30) - everything else, valet and MOTs were an offer already running at that dealership. Think they expect new car buyers will have it for 3-4 years then get another new one. They'll have a bloomin' shock in 2023 when I'm still coming in for free MOTs :-)

Also - the dealership I ordered from was very helpful and didn't give me any problems at all re. the scrappage scheme. He told me they were being actively encouraged to take orders on it (as per the Broadspeed info posted earlier on) and was happy to do so.

The other dealer, however, was more of the breed you seem to have dealt with - all sucking in air through his teeth, ooh and aaah-ing. I took my boyfriend with me and, although I introduced myself and told him what I wanted, etc. the dealer sat us down and directed his entire schpeel to my other half. When I politely clarified for him that I was the one that would be deciding whether to buy a car, he started with the whole 'long time to delivery' etc. etc. Quite what he expected to gain from it I'm not sure.

So if you're anywhere near Leeds I can recommend the Leeds dealership - very courteous and did the job with no fuss.

There has been some debate as to how the UK car scrappage scheme might apply to new car leasing contracts. Details are now beginning to be provided. For example, Nationwide Vehicle Contracts are providing discount codes that are specific to certain makes to enable customers to get a quotation modified by the relevant car scrappage allowance. So far they have provided: MINIGOV for discount on Mini Hatchbacks and FI500GOV for discounts of up to £2000 on the Fiat 500.
They are publishing details on their website car scrappage information page.
If you are eligible it makes sense to get whatever discount you can.
