So this scheme is going to send a lot of UK taxpayer's money abroad... interesting...

I think that's a bit short sighted. Even if the cars are made overseas, a lot of the money is going to end up here. Dealers make some sales, garages get to service them, the finance company takes a cut etc. Your insurance even goes up when you switch to a newer car most of the time.

Anyway, how many cars are actually made here any more? Nissan just assemble them, parts made in Japan and China. Maybe Ford?

Gives a few more details there, discount is only given for 'on the road' prices.
Some companies are offering money on top, Alfa gives another 3k off on some models.

Mercedes is offering 8k off the list price with some pre-existing deals, going with scrap and only 2k off wouldnt make much sense.

I would not expect imported cars to be the best deals because the uk currency is devalued by 25% since last summer so as above shows, prices have risen since the start of the year
  • The tax, insurance and mot are all due to run out on my 13 year old car at the end of the month, so I am very tempted at the new scrappage scheme.

I was looking at the Aygo or Clio - something small and economical. Is there a way of finding the best deals without trawling around all the dealerships?

Had my old banger for years, so out of touch with car buying!

There is no best deals for the scrap scheme, its off list price. Find the cheapest car you like and you get 2k off

Can someone please confirm that I don't qualify for this scheme before I waste time going to the dealers. I have a Cat D write off Honda. Happened about 3 years ago.

    Thanks in advance

Phone them up and ask on May 18th when its official

I think you might be ok because your car is road legal, the provision is most likely a reference to cars that may have a mot but are not road worthy in any way following an accident
  • I think at the moment it is a toss-up between a Clio, Yaris or Alto. All roughly £6,500 after the scrappage - so will be visiting all the showrooms and haggling.

Any advice anyone can give me would be appreciated.

My ford leaves belgium next week (was already on build order for the spec I wanted)

MatthewFC- http://www.parkers.co.uk/News/Scrappage-scheme/Cash-for-scrap-detail-update/ read the third point towards the bottom. I imagine it can be interpreted as being a car that is not CURRENTLY an insurance write off (i.e. still have MOT technically but been stuffed into a wall last week) rather than one that HAS been a cat C or cat D and made roadworthy again.

Keeping my old car maintained has put quite a bit of money into the local economy (my mechanic). Were I to get a new Euro-Korean car it will have been assembled abroad AND almost all parts manufactured abroad, with a sliver of UK dealer profit and no more money for my local mechanic while the 5 year warranty runs. I really haven't been able to work out yet what the true purpose of this scrappage scheme is, considering it has no environmental credentials either (compared with the German scheme for instance where best benefits went to buyers of really low emission cars).
