told me I can claim back any unused road tax on the old car.

thats because dealers are no longer allowed to cash in customer' road tax. But its a great tactic, as the customer thinks the dealers are being nice!

your scrap car still has to have a tax, insurance and an MOT on the date you collect your new car.

Which is farcical if the car is to be scrapped anyway.

    Typical of Government thinking.

Note too that people are not taking delivery yet... cos there's not enough stock! The airfields of unbought cars available are the medium & larger ones that used to be sold to companies, preregistration specialists and individual buyers taking large finance.

I don't think the 18 day strike that has only just been called off helps either

Can you tell me where you got the information about the MOT? Anything I have read says it only has to be valid at the point of ordering, not when it is actually delivered.

Hi just to answer Frogs and SMK77 My Mum & Dad had a 10 year old Renault Clio which they couldn't afford to replace. I came into a bit of money and bought them a new Kia lovely little car which they love and I now have their Clio, it runs like a dream has been serviced every year and is very economical. I'm going to university in September and I don't see the point in buying another new car which has got more chance of being scratched, dented etc while parked in a car park all day. I can afford to but a new car but don't want to. :)

That's right, there are so many benefits to running an older car, it will be hard for me to tear myself away from my 12 year old Vectra. Currently I do very low mileage, I suppose that if I did take part in the scrappage scheme, I'll have to invent reasons to go driving longer distances to justify the investment. Take a job further form home? Drive to France instead of taking the train? Now let me think...

Apologies if this has already been covered but...

Has anyone established if it will be possible to make a profit from the scappage scheme? My original idea was to get a Perodua Kelisa for about £2500 (as against list price of just over £4500), then sell it shortly afterwards. However Perodua have wisely decided not to take part in the scheme.

I see someone from the Telegraph had a similar idea.

Are there any cheap models where this profit could actually be made? Is this allowed under the terms of the scheme?

    Regards

Under the terms of the scrappage scheme, you have to have owned the vehicle for at least 12 months. The scheme ends in March 2010, or earlier if funding runs out. Therefore, it's not possible to make a profit by buying/reselling.

So they are offering a diesel for under £5000 with scrappage?
Excellent deal, I'd take their arm off for that, best I've found so far is the bottom range 1.1 petrol.
