Sorry, can't scan it as it is quite long!It is in the 'your business account important information' leaflet. For those wondering of they will be authed or not it says

'if you have a card that displays the Visa Debit logo and the card does not have a cheque guarantee facility you will only be able to use the card at a retailer/supplier of services where they can authorise the transaction with us at the time of the transaction being made.If this is not possible the transaction will be declined'

So it also looks that step accounts like business ones will get all auth only cards.
No mention of implementation ,but leaflet date is November 09.

    Hope it helps.
  • my replacement maestro card from natwest i got this morning is only valid from 05/09 - 04/10 where as my last one was valid for 2 years to 03/11. looks like everyone is right about the visa switch then. damn lol. does anyone know if they will keep the servicecard100 name like barclays did with their connect card?

Hmmm interesting, I am a Natwest manager and this is the first I have heard about this!

The only thing I am aware of is that RBS credit cards recently starting replacing existing customers Visa cards with Mastercards, not the other way around. Within Natwest there is currently only one card which is Visa and thats the Private Banking credit card.

i dont really understand the difference really maybe im thick, but i like my solo card i have with rbs, it deducts the amount spent immedialty from my account and i always know where i am. with maestro or visa i know it doea not always show up immediatly as a deduction and that would confuse me i could easily forget i have done a transaction and it not show up for three days .

Exactly ... you get 2p, whilst I get £5 on mine :) (not at Natwest!)

Yea but Halifax isn't much to brag over lets be honest here.......

I use HSBC and used to get 2% until today when they told us even though you muppets pay us £12.95 a month, we're now paying you a massive 0% interest!

Nice HSBC, great move to make! I know it was only £20 per annum maximum but its still £20 that we should get being we pay them £150 a year for little more than a black Maestro (at the minute - soon to be Visa debit) card!

    Card Markets

    RBS/NatWest dumps Maestro

Within two years, Maestro-branded cards will be collectors’ items in the UK, a key global market. News leaked out in mid-September that Royal Bank of Scotland, the last remaining issuer of Maestro of any consequence in the UK, will begin to issue Visa debit cards to its UK and US customers during H2 2009.
RBS/NatWest is following in the steps of HSBC/First Direct, which decided earlier this year to rebrand its Maestro cards as Visa debit (ECR, May/June, p5), lifting Visa’s share of the UK debit card market to about 75%. RBS is one of the UK’s principal debit card issuers and the fifth-biggest in the US, according to the Nilson Report.
Like HSBC, RBS says superior acceptance is the reason for the change. According to an RBS spokesman, “Visa Debit offers almost three times the global acceptance of Maestro making 29 million point-of-sale outlets available to customers across the world, providing an overall improved service for our customers.”
While this is no doubt true, it is also the case that interchange on Visa debit averages about 3p per transaction more than Maestro. Given Visa’s domination of the UK debit market, yet another competition inquiry cannot be ruled out.
Debit card payment volumes in the UK are the biggest in Europe, running at nearly 5 billion in 2007 and recording an annual growth rate of more than 8% over the past five years. UK Maestro issuers are core users of MasterCard’s ACS (authorization, clearing and settlement) system, whose volumes will in future be severely hit.
It remains to be seen what impact the UK issuers’ defection will have on other Maestro markets, but it is hardly a ringing endorsement. Though hundreds of millions of Maestro cards have been issued in Europe, in many countries Maestro cards are used mainly for cross-border transactions and volumes are low.
In Germany, around 90 million cards are Maestro-branded, but most domestic transactions are processed locally as ‘ec’/girocard transactions. While Austria and Switzerland have adopted Maestro as the ‘national’ debit scheme, processing of domestic transactions is handled by local processors. In Austria this is currently APSS/First Data, but Telekurs will process Austrian and Swiss Maestro cards from 2010 (see p12).
Once the migration of HSBC and RBS group cards is complete, the UK market will resemble Norway and Sweden, where Visa is almost the only debit brand and MasterCard the credit card/T&E card brand. The MasterCard brand has performed as well in the UK as Maestro has performed badly, and RBS says it will continue to work with MasterCard on its credit card programmes, though not exclusively so.

Good post '043775'. It's an interesting article.

Since Visa Debit offers almost three times the global acceptance of Maestro, why did RBS/Natwest offer Maestro in thefirst place? They should have a VISA debit system along time ago.

Christ knows RBS are a funny lot. However I have spoken to 3 different Natwest branches about this change and they seem not to know anything about it. I was wondering if the idea has been scraped now due to all there goverment bail outs etc.

We could do with an RBS insider ;-)

One Natwest member of staff even tried to get into abit of an argument with me about it "saying why would we want to change to visa debit"

The fact that the members of staff in the branches know nothing about this change is a bit worrying, although after speaking to a member of staff in the branch they say its not unusual that there left in the dark over changes taken place.

The next time your in a Natwest or RBS branch i would ask them to check there internal internet as it should be mentioned.
