I have just changed my bank to Natwest and have a current account with a Visa Debit Card but I can't use this at any pay at the pump petrol stations only by going into the shop and paying over the counter..

I think this defeats the object of going to a pay at the pump petrol station in the first place..

New General Conditions 13.3.4, 13.3.5 and 13.3.14 have been inserted and read as follows:
13.3.4 If you have a card that displays the Visa Debit logo and the card does not display a cheque guarantee hologram you will only be able to use your card at a retailer or supplier of services where they can authorise the transaction with us at the time of the transaction being made. If this is not possible the transaction will be declined.

  • So taking the above into account, is my new visa debit card about as useful as my visa electron? As I didn't opt for cheque guarantee when I opened the account..
This thread has me so pumped, I headbutted my dog and we both screamed.

The cards are a lot better than visa electon.

However you will not be able to use the card in pay pumps, on trains and airplanes. The company needs to be able to authorise the payment at POS like an electron card would need too. However the advantage of that is there is less risk of you going overdrawn.

  • Yeah I see.

Bit annoying because my partner has a basic cash account with Lloyds TSB which she didn't even get credit checked for, and she can use her card at the pumps etc.

I just spoke online to a Natwest adviser and he said you have to apply to change your card after 3 months if you want the cheque guarantee facility. What's the likelihood of this happening? Is it based on credit scoring?

Yeah it based on credit scoring as when you apply for a CGC, potentially if you got out with a 20 page cheque book and write 20 cheques for £100 using your CQC you would have then received £2000.00 in credit.

Id run your account for 3-6 months then apply for an upgrade and see whats happens.

got my new card through but I have a question - sometimes with online payments you only get the option of visa, mastercard, maestro or electron...I presume in this situation it is just classed as visa?
