This morning my brother got a visa debit card from HSBC. I was a bit puzzled by it because I thought the name for a visa debit card was "Visa electron". After some research I realised that it was a different card and would be accepted at places that accept a Visa card. This would be great for me as a Maestro holder from Natwest. I can't shop online at non-British websites and have to ask people to buy stuff on my behalf. I was considering getting one of those pre-paid cards but they're pretty expensive.

What other banks are issuing Visa debit cards now? I'm tempted to open a HSBC account just to get the card. I could just wait for Natwest to send me one, but that could take 2 years

If you want to go with HSBC you have to deposit £500 a month into the account if you are over 23.

Lloyds do VISA debit cards. And there is another bank that are starting to roll out them in replacement of Solo (as HSBC have done)

HSBC/First Direct, Halifax, Abbey, Lloyds TSB, Barclays, Nationwide, Co-op/Smile. There are probably more that I haven't thought of.

I have just been reading this article and you've got me wondering now if NatWest is switching over to a Visa Debit card.

I have just this week managed to upgrade my bank card to a Maestro Servicecard 100 and when I looked at the expiry date on the card, it said 12/10 which is only 1 year and a half away. I thought this was strange as normally a card will last about 3 years or if more.

After reading from here and checking those links some people have posted including wikipedia and the news article, I called a NatWest adviser today and asked about the switch to a Visa Debit card. She said it was in the pipeline and going to be carried out shortly. She even asked one of her managers too, just to confirm.

So everyone, looks like NatWest Visa Debit card is coming soon.

That seems unusual. Are you saying there's only one account that HSBC do that has a visa debit card?

I've just checked, apparently it's the only option unless you're willing to pay a monthly fee or are really loaded (or a student/grad). That crosses HSBC off my list.

I think that was pretty much common knowledge Shauney, but thanks anyway.

I'd say its now easier to list the banks that dont issue Visa Debit Cards.
