Good grief, I find it worrying that there are so many people happy to commit cruelty to animals and then joke or brag about it.

First of all, like another poster has said, cats DO help keep neighbourhoods clear of mice and rats and that doesn't only extend to their own gardens.

There are also ways and means of deterring cats from messing on your garden, such as using water sprays etc.

As for killing birds - has no one one here heard of the phrase or understand 'survival of the fittest'? It's nature for Pete's sake!

As for the neighbour of the original poster, if it were me being threatened that my cat would disappear i'd probably call the police, however, depending on their tone of voice and way in which I interpreted the comment I might be just as likely to say that the same would happen to the paint on their car - and it wouldn't stop there either.

People who threaten to harm animals in this way deserve to feel threatened themselves.

And as for the person complaining about pet hair on cinema or bus seats - for goodness sakes Get a Life!

If someone harms either a dog or cat I'd lock them up for at least a month, it's bullying pure and simple.
I wouldn't condone animal cruelty either but there are some pretty OTT responses on here from the kattikins fan brigade

I wouldn't worry about the council (unless you really want to).

You need to call your local PCSO and tell them that your neighbour has threatened your cat and have even implied that they may kill it. Ask if they'll have a word.

Your neighbour should not be making such disgusting threats about an animal. Cats kill birds. It's what they've done for centuries. They also kill rats, mice and other vermin. It's what they do.

Perhaps you'd like to have another word with your neighbour before you call the police just to ask them if they were serious becuase you're considering contacting the police? Personally, I wouldn't be taking this type of threat sitting down. Some people think they have the right to say and do what they like and don't care who they bully in the process - personally I'd just say, "Bring it on".
"One day I realised that when you are lying in your grave, it's no good saying, "I was too shy, too frightened."
Because by then you've blown your chances. That's it."

Ok I've had a good long think about all of this, I am going to call the council in the morning and as them not to speak to the neighbours regarding it on this occasion.

If I went to a PCSO would that have to be disclosed when I come to sell? If not perhaps that is my next best bet.

I haven't seen the neighbours since the threat (Thursday evening), which I'm hoping is a good sign. Perhaps it was just hot air on their part, or maybe they realise that there isn't much I can do and their response to the situation was unreasonable. I feel mildly uneasy every time I leave the house or return as I'm half expecting them to have a go again, but I guess that will pass as long as there is no more conflict regarding it.

Yes, it *would* have to be disclosed.

I think you have probably come to the right decision. People do sometimes sound off in the heat of the moment, exactly as you describe. It doesn't follow that they meant what they said at the time.Criticise anyone's pet or child and it can easily be exacerbated into a very unpleasant long running saga.

I dislike cats but I dilike cat owners that don't see how traumatising it is to see one playing with and then mauling a bird to death more than the cats themselves. I'm fed up of the neighbours cat that pulled a nest of greenfinches out of the tree and mauled them all, and the one that had a young thrush fitting in its mouth.

As for the crapping everywhere, well if I came and crapped in you're garden wouldn't you dislike me? I lob any cat poo I find over the fence onto the neighbours patio. Its their cat and therefore their problem so they can clean it up. I also have a super soaker that I fill with a mix of orange juice and water to spray them whenever I can and this is with the consent of my friend who lives nearby and who's cat is one that gets it occasionally.

Cats are disgusting animals and completely antisocial. I'm really surprised how many cat owners can't see what they are imposing on other people. If I had a dog that went round mauling the neighbours cats then everyone would be up in arms about me hourbouring a brutal animal... well cats are just the same in my opinion.

As for what the neighbour had said to the OP, they were probably overeacting but you need to understand that you're cats behaviour has caused people discomfort so maybe its time to stop being an antisocial neighbour and get it put down?

Sorry to be brutal but this is a subject close to my heart and it makes me angry that cat owners don't see the damage they do.

    And I quote...

"Holly leaves, berberis, bramble cuttings and small canes amongst plants in your own garden are perfectly acceptable cat deterrents. You can cover yourself by putting a sign up for pussikins warning it of the danger :rotfl:"

    Hilarious aren't you eh? TIT!

No, you need to do some reading up - its not the nature of the UK. Cats are a non native species so they don't fit anywhere into the natural cycle over here.
