Aye rates on loans aresupposedly better than the garage deals 90% of the time. But convenience or not thinking they'll be able to get one elsewhere stops people shopping about.

Don't let the scrappage scheme tease you Tete, one of my dads mates is a dealer and he said this scheme has him laughing, before they were bartering down up to 20% off the new price of a car, now people are paying the list price or near enough, and the government is giving them money too. He said often people would have gotten a better deal 3 months ago but didn't realise it, especially on the medium and bigger cars. End result (according to dads footie buddy) is people are paying more but think they're getting a bargain and his business is booming, he's a jammy sod i think!

The original plan was to get a newer old Micra for £1-2,000 ...

I'd go for this personally! The scrappage scheme is an okay idea, but if you've only got a couple grand to spend on a car, the dealers taking a couple grand off isn't going to make you magically have more money. No point putting yourself out of pocket to get a new car when a second hand one will do! But that's just me!

Still haven't made that dough, best get moving!

I'm with you Cinny, a new car is still going to depreciate by more than you've saved anyway, I'd rather get a nearly new one personally, but it is very exciting and obviously you do have the warranty with a brand new one.

You're a wise little thing young Cinnyetta, this has been my gut feeling all along to be honest, I think I've been getting carried away with the thought of my car being 'worth' £2000 if I do that, but worth nothing if I don't.

I'm sure you'd still get something for it Tete! I mean, my sisters old car was a right heap. Would never go a month without breaking down ect, put it on ebay and was really honest with it's problems and it sold for £800. After it sold my Dad proudly said 'Proves anything sells on ebay'

And yes, I am a Wise little thing! Quite like Yoda, only less green.

Got the dough in the bread maker now, feeling all big and clever like I've cheated the pizza system.

Cars ARE a total minefield! I ended up buying a new car last year over going round in circles for months. Crunch time came when my very beloved but very old and petrol-guzzling MX6 was looking at a minimum £650 to get it through the MOT. Plus it cost an awful lot to run and there's always that fear that something is going to go wrong. I never dreamed that I would buy a new car (finance, depreciation etc etc) but OH has had some bad experience with 4/5 year old cars and we couldn't afford to spend £2k on something 2nd hand but still not know how much it would cost over the year.

So anyway... (hope you're still with me) we did lots of sums and worked out that with the deal we were getting (free insurance, free tax, no MOT for 3 years, low % interest, 3 year warranty) we were better off with the new one. Stupidly, it would have worked out more expensive to have an older car from the same dealer as the finance wasn't as good and you don't get the warranty. It's been a total godsend that I have been able to budget for the next 3 years - even though I have payments to make, they actually work out less per month than I was paying before (and hopefully the car will still be worth something at the end of it!).

Sorry, I've actually bored myself a little bit and I LOVE my car! The only advice really is to work out what is best for you in your current situation. I've also heard that the scrappage scheme isn't all it's cracked up to be - I looked into it as I was v. annoyed that it wasn't available when I scrapped my 17year old beast!

Still at least I've changed the subject from babies which was starting to scare me! :o

    Hi everyone

Well, I got the mortgage stuff through today but have to wait for OH to sign it as he lives here too. He's away on his messy stag do in Newcastle (I've had pictures already which involved the groom wearing a Borat mankini and socks - not pretty!!!) so I'll have to wait til Sunday (if he's still able to write by then). I should have a half decent weekend, though although I'm doing overtime tomorrow (every little helps) and going to sort out the paperwork for a little ad hoc job that should help the bank account along a bit. I'm also going to try and catch up with surveys and dooyoo to get a bit more money.

have a good weekend peeps xx

Ooh how exciting, peeps from Southampton.... I can see it out of my window! I live about 4 miles from Southampton.

I'd love a nice new car but can't afford to do it.My Mum has a 3yr old Fiesta which costs £35 a year tax, she's trading it in for another Ford (My grandad gets 25% off due to working for them many moons ago) and Ford have offered her £3500 for it. She said if I could get the money I could buy it from her for that but I can't even raise £3.50 at the mo :o

Dinah~have been reading but this diary moves so fast I get lost too easily!! But well done on all that money saving

    Hi TPA

We do have a Howden's in Wakey so I'm going to look there but may try Magnets too (for Nectar points) but all the obvious places too. Got a friend's husband who's an out of work builder who will do the kitchen so at least it keeps the cost down for us but helps him out too.

By the way, just seen your sig and the mortgage overpayments - that's phenomenal!

Thank you, the last payment was partly due to hubbys bonus - unbelievable in the current climate, but he works really hard and certainly deserved it. I have done all the 'free' bingo sites etc. and have just started mystery shopping, every little helps, its amazing how quickly these small amounts add up at the end of the month.
