Where can I go and what to buy to safely whiten my teeth? I do not want to weaken my teeth. I do not have showing fillings or crowns. Teeth just done yellow with age. I do not smoke, drink tea or coffee or wine. How much would it cost. Thanks

over the counter whitening kits in this country are basically useless because they don't use the same ingrediants that dentists use to whiten teeth

I've used the Crest whitening strips from america. I bought them from ebay at a good price. They're great.

It says you may get shooting pains when you first use them... I had one or two but I stuck with it and didn't get them after a few uses.
They're great and make a noticeable difference after just one pack!

Sunset Teeth Whitening Clinic (no spaces)

I would like to give the feedback to the above mentioned “clinic”in Romford for those who asked about it in the past. One of my acquaintances from another forum suggested we take advantage of their current deal 2 people for laser whitening for the price of 150, so 75 p. each.

I looked through their web site, which looked professional to me and having read a couple of positive reviews in here (particularly from Dan899 in this thread) decided to give it a go.

We came there, greeted by an Asian looking man (name didn’t register). He gave us forms to fill in in the waiting area. It smelled of oriental fragranced sticks and somehow just didn’t give you that “clinic” impression. There were around 10 booths with closed doors there and as it seemed that he was on his own, I wondered how he managed several people at a time.
My acquaintance didn’t seem to be bothered about the whole aura , she had done laser procedure in the past at a different place. So I decided perhaps I was overthinking.

Then I asked the guy who’s going to perform the whitening. He said himself. So I asked a couple of questions regarding the cosmetic fillings I had and the percentage of peroxide he used (which was 35%). He didn’t ask once whether I had any gum problem or other conditions, didn’t say how long procedure’s gonna take, etc. The whole attitude was “no problem” bordering “whatever”. He requested money up front in cash and didn’t issue any receipts to us.

Then we went to two different dingy little cubicles. I had special dental spreader fitted into my mouth + cotton sticks! (I mean normal cotton sticks from Boots) that he used for gum protection. The laser lamp was put over and lit on and then he walked away.
I felt really vulnerable with this gag in my mouth unable to speak and left without supervision. I knocked on the wall when I felt unpleasant shooting pain in one of my teeth. The person only materialized in 3 minutes or so and looked annoyed, said it’s normal. In the end I was given a toilet tissue to wipe the gel off myself and pointed to the bathroom, so I could rinse my mouth. He only did 4 upper and 4 lower front teeth, I could see about a couple of shades difference on them, but nothing dramatic. My friend didn’t see the difference in pigment at all and said she experienced highly unpleasant needle type pains also.

When I requested the receipt was told that he closed the cash desk now (was 7 pm) and would send it via email ( which obviously never happened).

Although I realize that I should have gone with the gut feeling and walked away despite my arrangement with another person, Toothsmith and other people who posted here before, your advice, as to where I could report this would be much appreciated.

You can report them to the general dental council i don't know whether your local trading standards might be interested.
the website for the dental council is here http://www.gdc-uk.org/

With them issuing no receipts, then it may not be a bad idea to report this to your local tax office.

In many countries, including ours, the most stringent regulations and enforcement protocols are wielded by the national tax offices!!

Remeber it was 'tax evasion' that finally got Al Capone banged up!!
    How to find a dentist.
    1. Get recommendations from friends/family/neighbours/etc.
    2. Once you have a short-list, VISIT the practices - dont just phone. Go on the pretext of getting a Practice Leaflet.
    3. Assess the helpfulness of the staff and the level of the facilities.
    4. Only book initial appointment when you find a place you are happy with.
