"Some of us prefer not to take media hype at face value!"
I think thats a little sad really, I just wish it was all media hype. I think everyone should take precautionary care and altho there is a lot of media hype, I dont think that the people who have been hurt in the past feel that their cases were media hype!!0 -
pmsl very good :rotfl:They won't have been from the 'job centre' but will have been con men from a debt collection agency.
If I ever get these people asking about neighbours (usually on the phone but once at the door), I p*ss them off by telling them there is an up-front fee of £100 cash, which must be paid before I check if I have any information. That gets rid of them very quickly.0 -
I don't live in a "nasty" area. It's pretty affluent - and bogus callers can strike anywhere. To think otherwise is pretty naive......but then again you never realise how common this type of thing is until you've become a victim yourself.
I'm a neighbourhood watch co-ordinator and it's standard issue advice that I've given.
The OP is under no obligation to have to "check the ID" of any caller. Just shut the door and ignore them. If they want information on the habits of people in your neighbourhood - they'll have to find some other way of finding out.
Sorry if you thought I meant that you live in a bad area. However, the day I put a chain on my door before opening it will be the day I know the b*stards have won. Personally I'm not prepared to live my life like that or to suggest that others should do so.0 -

lol no I didn't think that. All I was trying to say is that I don't live in a bad area but as part of my NhW role, I get all the relevent crime reports for the area and am always shocked at the amount of crimes that actually go on in a pretty "quiet" crime neighbourhood.
I don't use my chain either, but then again, I don't consider myself vunerable."One day I realised that when you are lying in your grave, it's no good saying, "I was too shy, too frightened."
Because by then you've blown your chances. That's it."0 -

Which is what I said in the first place! (And, of course, if you feel vulnerable.)0 -
I think we all have too much free time!

I can see a problem with that. What if the same people chap your door a month later? They may get suspicious and report you to the police or ASDA. Or someone. Always think ahead!
Good name and as I've found out in life meeting lots of people who are all ages -age has nothing to do with wisdom. Lots of dumb pensioners out thereOldernotwiser0 -

Possibly true, although I'm not one of them. Old enough to have manners though, certainly enough not to use obscenities on a public forum or to people on my doorstep, much less to call people collecting for charity "scum"!0
