Personally I would never give info about neighbours as never sure who people are or why they are looking for them.

They won't have been from the 'job centre' but will have been con men from a debt collection agency.

If I ever get these people asking about neighbours (usually on the phone but once at the door), I p*ss them off by telling them there is an up-front fee of £100 cash, which must be paid before I check if I have any information. That gets rid of them very quickly.

I bet you wouldn't of given any info over the phone! Being door-stepped can be uncomfortable so get a sign telling people to politely f*** off and that will pre-warn them and also remember you every time you go in and out of your door- to tell people "I don't know". That's if you want to be very polite.

If you are worried about the incident I'd make notes and tell the police you had suspicious people at your door. After all they were suspicious -but only after you had opened your mouth.

Best to say nothing in future.

So two men turn up at your door asking about your neighbour and you start telling them her personal details and habits?!

I'd hate to have you as a neighbour!

Supposedly if she gets broken into this week you'll be mentioning all this to her?

Now, be nice :) Being doorstepped can be very uncomfortable for people as they don't have time to think. This is why general scumbags, charity scum, peg sellers, tramps, the police etc doorstep. It's a personal intrusion of your privacy. Or at least it is for many people.

It is when your next door neighbour goes round telling anyone who asks them your private business.
