I'm using a macmini ppc and a Polaroid 1080i 26" TV as the display. The 1280 by 720 is the best option for me because it fills the screen and doesn't make everything look stretched (unlike the other 1280 options available for this format for me). I also have the refresh set at 60hz (NTSC). If anyone can suggest something better for this set-up, I'm all ears, but I suppose at the moment it's a case of if it ain't broke, don't fix it...:rotfl:

60hz will be spot on, you might be better off running at 1360x768, give it a try.

Please don't design for larger monitor sizes than 1024x768. I remember the 640x480 thing being standard even when 800x600 was the most common - it's for those with older computers.

It seems most people now have a larger resolution than 1024x768 and it's very irritating as I have to scroll on a few websites. The new hotmail interface as well is incredibly cramped. And my computer's not that old!
I don't believe and I never did that two wrongs make a right

1920x1080 ... I'm temporarily using the 52" telly in the living room as I haven't access to my lappy or my usual 22" & 17" monitors right now

I'm quite liking it :) but it's not very practical
  • Curiously though, working with everything maximised seems to be a very Windows way of doing things.

No, we just need the space whilst we work. As a software designer I need as much screen real estate as possible especially for Visual Studio with all the side toolboxes, properties, solution explorer etc, etc.
Idealy two screens side by side so I can drag those docked windows off and see what I'm really working on.

Users are a varied lot. Quite a few put their screens in 800 by 600 because the font is larger and one admitted it's because she's too vain to wear her glasses! :rotfl:

And Mac users don't need space while they work?

It was just a personal observation. I don't see why "needing space" necessitates having a browser window that's 1440 pixels wide.

Sounds more like wasting space to me, but whatever. *shrugs*

You really can't match multiple monitors if you need more space to work with. Having the flexibility to go from landscape to portrait really is handy for maximising what you've got too.

I see this at work all the time, we all have the same monitor which are 19" TFT with a 1280x1024 native resolution. I would say 98% of people in this office use 1024x768 "because everything is too small". I am one of the 2% who likes a clear image and the extra working space.

I always change it when I go to another computer just to be asked to change it back sometime later, I always try educating them but it never works.
