Why? Because LCD screens only look 'right' at their native resolution.

I've noticed that too. My friend with a mac doesn't maximise windows, whereas I do. Even when using two monitors, I have one thing maximised on each monitor.

Ive done that since Workench days though, so it's not a windows thing in my case at least. :)

I guess it's because Mac OS X doesn't have a maximise button, it has a zoom button which resizes the window to fit its contents.
  • I'm the same as weegie.geek, I alway maximise. I don't actually know why, but I dont like clutter on my screens, so would rather switch programs than have more than one visible. I run 3 monitors at work, and have something maximised on each (not inc messenger windows).

Are you only allowing MSE members to view your site? If not it's largely irrelevant what we are using. If you search the web you will find worldwide stats on screen resolutions. However, websites should not be designed for any one particular resolution, for many reasons.

That most be a very old book to recommend designing for one set resolution, things have moved on since then. I'd recommend a new book on web design and useability :o Good luck with your site.

    2048 x 1152.

Not really relevant though. Design it for 1024 width and use Firefox Web Dev Toolbar to set your window size.

If the book you're reading mentions 640x480 it must be hugely out of date. I'd seriously look for another book that deals with XHTML and CSS.

That assumes that people only do one thing at a time when using their computer. I'm chatting on messenger and watching TV on mine as well as browsing. Sometimes I'll be using iTunes, talking on Skype, and checking my emails as well. Websites that want to take over my whole screen are very very annoying.

    Marty J,

You really would benefit from exploring how Spaces in OS X can assist you with this. :)
