So I just found out about giffgaff and decided to switch the whole family to it, starting with my daughter - her Sony/Ericsson W350i (Virgin) just worked with the giffgaff SIM no problems, no unlock necessary.
My Wife's Nokia 6101 however demanded a code, I searched and found the threads here and found it in the DTC4 list, got a code from unlockme .co .uk which unlocked it right away. Wife & Daughter can now phone & text each other for free on gg, a great moneysave!
Then the problems started, my phone. It is a (3 years old now) Nokia 3110c but apparently a "BB5" model and can't be easily unlocked. After hours of research (literally) on hackers forums and the like I gave up and phoned Virgin. They gave me the £15.36 spiel (which seems like daylight robbery to me, and I told them so, can buy a new handset for little more, AND what's really painful is it more than doubles the cost of my first credit on gg!) which I reluctantly agreed to, THEN when I gave them the IMEI they said something about my phone not being in their database and they couldn't help! I should go back to the shop where I bought it from (Phones4U, over the internet, with a virgin SIM, incidentally).
Phones4U poor support is legendary and I havn't even bothered to try them yet. Update: I called them after this and they said they couldn't help, suggested trying the network provider or a market stall...
Can anyone recommend a corner shop West London Waterloo/Central area that would do it for less than a tenner? Update: tried a small shop under the railway bridge in Waterloo road (between East and main stations) - they fiddled around for a bit then said it can't be done!
Are these "BB5" phones ever likely to be unlockable by code (the phone does ask for a code, after all....) my phone info is:Sw: v.07.21 05-11-08 RM-237 (c) Nokia. Imei: 359829017994384 Provider key: 8000000000000000 Config key: 2340000100000000 Key Code count: 0 , FBUS Code count: 0 Simlock Status: Locked
Thanks for reading my rant! Ed.0 -

I've worked around the problem for now - given up on that phone and bought a "refurbished" one from mobiles.co.uk, it cost me £7.90 plus a £10 O2 top-up voucher - which can also be used on giffgaff - and comes ready unlocked. I won't be falling for that trick again.0
