    Hello everyone

I'm trying to reduce food budget so making lots of homemade, soups, cakes, biscuits etc.

The problem is, ever since I mentioned this to OH, although there is still plenty of food, and meals are basically the same, he seems to be hungry all the time.

I'm sure this is a mental thing rather than physical, brought on by thinking there's not as much food in the house! Therefore, have decided to make plenty of savoury pies as are filling and he can have a slice if peckish.

Anyway, have made a large batch of short crust pastry and decided to make some pies - some for freezing, and wonder if you could give me some OS ideas.

I'm doing a savoury mince and potato plate pie, and also a cheese, onion and potato pie - any other recipes would be most welcome

    Thanks

I'd love recipes for this too please. Especially a mince and onion pie. The type on a tin plate with pastry underneath as well as on top IYKWIM! I have never been able to find a recipe for it.

chicken and mushroom, chicken and bacon, chilli con carne, all day breakfast type ie sausages, diced potatoe, bacon, maybe chopped egg ? not sure on that bit lol. we like mince beef with baked beans mixed in and good sprinking of chilli powder for a bit of a kick not tried it in a pie, but don't see why it wouldn't work.

what about making quiches, don't have to make a big one, but could also make smaller i portion size, with fillings such as cheese and onion, my mum used to make a weird one with smoked makerel, but surpisingly it was really nice. but i'm odd like that i hate things like pilchards on toast but if my dad is eating it when i go and see them i have to have a bite or two, lol.

My favourite is corned beef pie, very cheap too.

I use a recipe similar to this to make 2 plate pies and they freeze well too. I use 2 large baking potatoes, slightly larger than a coke can each and a regular sized can of corned beef, 340g I think

I season it with celery salt and white pepper

Someone mentioned yesterday leftover stew pie (meat and veg!)

    Hi emiliah,

My favourites are chicken and leek, beef in ale and mince and onion.

    These threads have more ideas:

    "plate Pies"

I'll add your thread to the first link later to keep the suggestions together.

This Chicken and Onion Pie is one of my absolute favourites (and as an added bonus, massively frugalicious) - just adapt by using the pastry you already made, and remember you can use any chicken you may have, don't have to poach a whole one from scratch, although that is the most frugal option.

This Bacon and Onion Pudding can also be made as a pie - just use your pastry and then cook in the oven as for the chicken pie.

Other frugal options: mince and onion as already mentioned, vegetable (whatever is lying about, cooked in white sauce or gravy ), sausagemeat and onion (you can just skin whatever sausages you have lying about), leftover curry or stew of any description....

I buy a big thing of cheap red onions (the Basic ones that were too small to sell in the net packets) and chop them up and fry them with a bit of balsamic and maybe a tbsp of brown sugar if I've got it in the cupboard. Then I take it off the heat and stir in an egg or two if they're lurking in the fridge and put it in the pie. Then I put some cheese (goats cheese is good but you could put on any really) and cook it. Sometimes I put philly in with the onion but it makes them a funny colour. They still taste good and a lid would hide the funny colour!

I think you probably will want to watch the cost of the pies too? So meat is a bit of a luxury...worth having a few veg alterantives.

Homity pie is delicious. And perhaps a standard cheese and onion pies?

Its a useful vehicle for left over meats though...
