I buy Kallo organic stock cubes. They dont contain anything hydrogenated, although I've only used the beef ones and low-salt veg ones and not chicken ones yet. I get them from the local helath food shop and Morrisons sell them as well. They're about 80p for six I think, which isn't as cheap as some of the other, but they don't contain any junk.0 -
I buy the kallo stock cubes, and vegetable bouillion too, good stuff with no additives, but can be a bit salty. If you cant find it in the supermarket, Holland & Barrett sell it0

thriftmonster wrote:One way of checking the amount of Hydrogenated fat is to go to the nutrition panel. Add up the figures for saturated, poly and mono unsaturated fat. Compare this total with the total fat figure and any difference is hydrogenated. It's amazing how often there is a difference even if the ingredients don't show it.
This only works if all 3 fats are split out - not on the ones where only the amount of saturated is found.
i thought as much
<goes to check cupboards again> :rolleyes:0 -

The low-salt vegetable cubes by Kallo are very good. I've just been put on a low salt diet, so these are fine for me. As far as I can see there's no added salt, but they do contain celery, so I guess this is where they get a bit of saltiness from.0 -
http://www.tfx.org.uk/page13.html says that its contained in Mars bars. Yet the labelling for mars bars says that it contains only vegetable oil? No mention of hydrogenated vegetable oil?0

I dont eat Mars so cant say, but it's possible the ingredients have been changed since the article was written, I know for a fact that snickers contains it because i wont eat them anymore! used to be my fave as well0 -
What really shocked me was when I discovered how many different brands of ice cream contain it!0

found this on the tfx site:
"In the past two years partially hydrogenated vegetable oil has been removed from dozens of Britain's best-known brands, including Mars Bars and McVitie's digestive biscuits"0 -

Having spent the past month feeling guilty over my OH's raised cholesterol levels due to my cheese butties and red meat cooking. I can now pass the blame onto the choccie biccies he was eating every day at work. Now there's even more info to read on the labels at the shops.
Pass the butter dish please someone.
