    I read the labels on everything and have avoided trans fats for almost a year now, but the one item I really struggle with is suet. I just can not find it anywhere without hydrogenates. The only suet I can find is Atora which seems to be pure hydrogenate.
    I have asked all my local butchers and even a farm a fair way of which sells their own meat, but they don't get the suet back from the slaughter house unless they ask for it specifically and even then they said they often get just regular fat back.
    So if anyone can help with a suet supply, (short of getting my own pigs) I would be very grateful.
    There is nothing either good or bad but thinking makes it so.

    BUM! I am avoiding trans fats too and have just bought some suet this morning without checking the label. Haven't ever bought it before. 'I must always check the labels.'

  • I have known about hydrogenated/trans fats for years and have been trying to avoid them - trouble is, they are in nearly everything, particularly if you are shopping for cheaper stuff. One product which I avoided because I thought it must be full of rubbish is Stork soft margarine. It has no hydrogenated fats or trans fats and the ingredients list shows no other nasties. At 39p for 500g if they can do it why can't other manufacturers who sell much dearer stuff. I use it for all my baking now! One other thing - whenever you fry anything the fat you fry in becomes automatically hydrogenated - that is why IMHO it is better not to fry anything. Roasting does the same thing to fat but temps don't get as high as for frying.

    Oh heck and I was going to make a suet crust for the pie I am making tonight.... oh well maybe start tomorrow....

    Just had a quick look in my fridge and store cupboard and Hurrah it actually says on my cooking oil NO HYDROGENATED OIL but also there is nothing about it on my Suet packet either.. :confused: On my mixed fruit it says Hydrogenated vegetable oil so I guess I need to look more closely at that..

    It also bugs me that the writing on the labels is so small I need my reading glasses to actually see it.. I don't usually wander around with my glasses on ....

    So what should I be looking for on the labels ? I shop in Tesco by the way is there anywhere I could look that might list the foods I should look out for...

    Are you sure about frying automatically hydrogenating the fats ? I've never read anything about this happening as a result of 'normal' frying/cooking but am no chemist.

    Hi Everyone

    So what will my label say 'hyrogenated' ? or other things. We normally cook from scratch on all most things but if its in dried fruit & suet where else is it ?

    I thought it was safe to fry or roast in olive oil as apparently that was a healthy fat . Am I wrong? Due to gallstones I have to check the labels and it is shocking that even the most innocuous (sp?) item suddenly becomes an "at risk " item .
    I have 2 small sons and would welcome any easy, child friendly recipes available. Neither are keen on red meat but love chicken and fish . Go Girl ........

    Trans fats are illegal in many countries. I can't believe we put up with them still being used in our food. I try to minimse the effect they have on our diet along with saturated fat but struggle as they are in nearly everything. The annoying thing is they are completely replaceable and not necessary.
