    I've been Money Tipped!
I try and avoid transfats as much as possible. What I wonder though, do they have to list that the fat is actually hydrogenated or can they list it just as vegetable fat/oil etc. Just curious. I've seen partially hydrogenated too which is just as bad. I think the only chocolate biscuit (treat for me) is Kit Kats. The bulk of biscuits in the supermarkets are loaded with TFs. I've also noticed that since I've avoided eating transfats moreso now, I've lost a few pounds.

I found that virtually all cakes and biscuits at the supermarket contain HVOs. After lots of searching I found about 3 products in the whole aisle that were free of them. Unbelievable.

Cadbury chocolate fingers & Cadbury chocolate marshmallows were free of them.

All Cadburys Biscuits and Mcvities are now free of Hydrogenated oils, never used to be but they recently changed.
  • the best supermarket for non hydrogenated products is M & S
Waitrose make me sick, they are not cheap and they are meant to represent quality yet they still continue to put that rubbish into most of their bread, cakes and anything else they can get away with.
  • if i cant get a product with non hydrogenated fats, then I buy it organic, if I cant get it organic I do without!!!
  • discovered one day that the only cake that I could buy from sainsburys that did not have hydrogenated oil in it was a yorkshire tea cake!!!!!! Glad tho' 'cos its scrummy :) and I might never have bought it otherwise

Trans fats are illegal in many countries. I can't believe we put up with them still being used in our food. I try to minimse the effect they have on our diet along with saturated fat but struggle as they are in nearly everything. The annoying thing is they are completely replaceable and not necessary.

    yes it is quite astounding

I was just wondering about margarine...

I always assumed that this ALWAYS contained HVOs, but I noticed the other day in a supermarket that some brands don't contain it.

    Does all margarine contain trans-fats?

If not, is it safe/healthy anyway?
Of course, I may just be talking b****cks!

I bought suet from Tesco I bought their own brand, I always check labels for HVOs so I'd be surprised if I missed it on the packet, but I might be wrong.

They may have changed it recently but I checked Tesco suet yesterday hoping it didn't contain it, but it's the first ingredient same as Atora.

The other thing that is almost impossible to get without it are stock cubes. I got some tesco value blue and white chicken which didn't have it, and some flavours of Oxo didn't have it, but it was very hit and miss.
There is nothing either good or bad but thinking makes it so.

One way of checking the amount of Hydrogenated fat is to go to the nutrition panel. Add up the figures for saturated, poly and mono unsaturated fat. Compare this total with the total fat figure and any difference is hydrogenated. It's amazing how often there is a difference even if the ingredients don't show it.

This only works if all 3 fats are split out - not on the ones where only the amount of saturated is found.
