I think it reflects the fact that the SC isn't really designed for vegetarian meals. Long, slow cooking is best for cheaper cuts of meat, that need a long, slow cook. IMO, vegetables need to have the minimum of cooking to preserve flavour and nutrition :D

I've found this older thread - Vegetarian SCs - I'll add this thread to that one later.

    Hi MUMOF4,

I'm also vege and tend to use my SC most for soups. I bung in anything, add lentils or other pulses, whack it on high for a couple of hours and then turn to low and leave overnight. I like my soup smooth so I blitz it all with my handheld blender thingy and voila - lovely soup.

Slow cookers are great for veggie/vegan meals - chillis, curries, baked potatoes, shepherd's pie, veggie casseroles/stews, soups, hot fruit puddings, etc. The long slow cooking is great for bringing out the flavour in spicy dishes. Definitely a good buy for any vegetarian/vegan.

  • hate to but in as I'm thinking of getting one in the sales, as my cooker is on its last legs, do people use them that much when your a veggie family?
can anyone recomend a good cheap one?
    hi mum of 4!
  • Ok so I'm a veggie and I'm looking to get a slow cooker, I'm only going to need a small one as theres just me and my boy. As I'm starting college this sept I wanna not have to worry about dinner when I get in.

Questions: Are slow cookers suitable for veggie dishes, or is it limited? I can only think of a few things I could do in one and every slow cooker recipie book I've looked in is all meat!

Can you put a frozen say spaghetti bog sauce in one say and cook it or does it have to be from fresh?

    Thanks

I don't think you could put frozen stuff in, as it says on the box it's a slow cooker, therefore a low heat. Before it would start cooking your meal would need to defrost.
Can't you defrost in the microwave then put it in the SC.

If you got the frozen food out and put it in the slow cooker the night before, it should be defrosted the next morning when you turn it on.

I'm a veggie and have 2 slow cookers so that when I'm cooking a meaty meal for the family, I can do a veggie soup or casserole for me.
