When paying cash to buy a car there may be some Money Laundering regulations that require this.

on another note why are people so bothered on being so private? Do you feel you are so important that it would be a dilema for people to know something about you?? I never understand why people are so cagey about this type of thing? If you were perhaps the Queen or Richard Branson or similar then maybe but when you are Joe Bloggs and you just like to feel important then I don't see why not just be cooperative.

Another example of you getting on your high horse when you haven't read the post properly. See below

Last year I bought a car for cash from a large chain of garages.I was not allowed to pay and arrange a collection date until I had been interviewed by the garage's financial advisor.I pointed out that I did not want finance, had just paid the full amount with a debit card, and would be supplying insurance documents for them to tax it.Why did they need to ask further financially related questions. I was then told if they didn't do this they would be in trouble from the government's financial regulators.

looby-loo it sounds like the Nat West must have broken the law then if they did not fill out one of those forms...

We did it on the screen and he printed it and I read it and signed it - normal sort of questions, address & how long, marital status, dependants, rough income (but not expendeture, mortgage), contact email & phone, occupation, did I have a credit card, did I have another bank account (but not names),may be more but can't think. Then he gave me copies to keep.

Glad to hear you had a good experience, did they ask you any questions you weren't happy with? or that may be considered an invasion on your privacy?

No not really, except that I used to teach the guy so now he knows my income, but hey, he knows my role so can look that up on the net if he is that interested anyway.

Ok, I apologise for missing the bit about "Lifestyle" but everything else sounds similar to looby loos experience at Natwest and the bit about being "In addition" is irrelevant because different banks have different methods. For example when looby loo went into Natwest all q's will have been part of application process including relationship status and income etc etc. So if you had went into Natwest you wouldn't have had a problem? As the questions all reasonable. Once again i apologise for skimming your oriinal post.

The money laundering laws are simple, you do not refuse the sale whether it is a car sale, jewellery purchase, sale of an insurance product, investment etc etc you simply ensure report it to through the money laundering channels.

thanks for clearing this up, i did think may be the same as banking in that like you said large amount it gets reported but if you have any suspicion about a transaction even if you know it will already be reported then you have to also report it yourself.

Just a post of yours from another thread. Is this also a case of:

Looks like you need to practice what you preach: http://www.tvlicensing.co.uk/information/tvdetectorvans.jsp

You're struggling a bit with this aren't you? The above is a bit like saying "There is a God!" and providing a link to the Vatican's website as proof. Your stalking-like behaviour is going off topic but nevertheless: http://www.bbctvlicence.com/Detector%20vans.htm

Sigh.....you've taken the section that relates specifically to ONLY those businesses to which the Money Laundering Regulations 2007 relate to, and somehow decided that they apply to ALL businesses. You probably tripped over the relevant page during your travels: http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/MLR/bus-areas.htm

dacouch: It would be nice to see your proof for this.

Garages have to report payments over a certain amount in cash, they do not have to ask you lots of questions about your lifestyle and wages etc they just have to report it. They do not have to refuse the sale they just report it
