People should not passively put up with the ever greater intrusions into their privacy. It is not being unreasonable - it is Barclays that is being unreasonable.

If enough people resist then companies and institutions and government will be forced to change their policies. I have no doubt that privacy and the ever increasing information that is held about individuals and the way that databases will merge to give an even more complete picture of individuals will be an issue that grows and grows in the public consciousness.

It is dismaying that some people feel their most personal information is worthless and give it away freely to entities that have no need to collect this excessive information. Maybe they should wonder why companies are going to such time and expense to collect this information - even to the extent of keeping customers waiting so long that they lose business.

Fire Fox I certainly appreciate your post and have been put off opening this years ISA with Barclays because of the reports of poor service. Ignore the idiots who are not smart enough to understand how valuable their personal information is and thanks for the heads up.

You wouldn't have been there an hour and half if I was the advisor I'd have thrown you out after twenty minutes for being a loon
It's taken me years of experience to get this cynical

I totally agree. Barclays is a business, and there is no way they are going to spend a lot of time asking a lot of questions unless it was of financial benefit to them. These questions are a cynical attempt to profile and target new customers with other products.

One day those that say there is nothing wrong with this will wake up and find that none of their personal data is no longer private.
We may even see an extension of this to other non financial products. In fact it is already hapening.

Last year I bought a car for cash from a large chain of garages.I was not allowed to pay and arrange a collection date until I had been interviewed by the garage's financial advisor.I pointed out that I did not want finance, had just paid the full amount with a debit card, and would be supplying insurance documents for them to tax it.Why did they need to ask further financially related questions. I was then told if they didn't do this they would be in trouble from the government's financial regulators.

Funnily enough the previous car purchase was from a one man garage, who not only just took a cheque for payment without a lot of questions, but allowed me to drive off the same day before the cheque had cleared.

When paying cash to buy a car there may be some Money Laundering regulations that require this.

on another note why are people so bothered on being so private? Do you feel you are so important that it would be a dilema for people to know something about you?? I never understand why people are so cagey about this type of thing? If you were perhaps the Queen or Richard Branson or similar then maybe but when you are Joe Bloggs and you just like to feel important then I don't see why not just be cooperative.

Is it maybe because you have something to hide?

All the extra information like marital status, employment and income is for security.

If you put £1 as your income and then £1,000.00 comes in regularly you will set off money laundering checks.

Ah, the old "if you value your privacy you must have something to hide" comment.

Maybe we just, you know, value our privacy. Maybe we just, you know, value our freedom (which is subtly eroded by this kind of thing). Maybe we've just learnt that the less detail you release about yourself and the less frequently you do so, the less your chances of being a victim of identity fraud.
If you don't stand for something, you'll fall for anything
