From Barclays website, I think the information they gather is more likely to be used for this...
10.3 We and other companies in the Barclays Group will use your information to manage your account(s), give you statements and provide our services, for assessment and analysis (including credit and/or behaviour scoring, market and product analysis), to prevent and detect fraud, money laundering and other crime, carry out regulatory checks and meet our obligations to any relevant regulatory authority, and to develop and improve our services to you and other customers and protect our interests.
10.4 We and other members of the Barclays Group will use your information to inform you by letter, telephone, text (or similar) messages, digital television, e-mail and other electronic methods, about products and services (including those of others) which may be of interest to you. You may tell us at any time if you do not wish to receive marketing communications from us and/or other members of the Barclays Group by writing to us providing your full name, address and account details.0 -
As 'detector' vans don't actually detect anything (they just drive them around council estates with "Detector Van" in big letters to intimidate the residents) and Noel doubtless lives at the end of a large drive with big gates and security staff, the chances of this happening are nil.

Just a post of yours from another thread. Is this also a case of:It never ceases to amaze me that there are people around who, when they clearly have no idea of the answer, just randomly guess for no apparent reason.
Looks like you need to practice what you preach: http://www.tvlicensing.co.uk/information/tvdetectorvans.jsp0 -
I don't want to get into the middle of the argument which seems to be running here but this week I needed to open an ISA and a savings account. I looked on the recommendations on here and chose Barclay's and Nat West. These happen to also have branches in the next village 2 miles from my house. Went to their websites. Looked at both. Took me 5 mins to decide on Nat West as it was very user friendly and clearly set out. I was put off Barclay's due to all the other flashy info all over the screen. That might be unfair but as I had not looked at either site before that is how it came across.
Drove to Nat West, walked in at 2.03 (just as The Archers started on Radio 4), straight to counter, asked to make an appointment - no need, went straight in. Said what I needed, completed a few questions on the screen, he printed documents for all three accounts, photocopied my ID, I signed where I needed to (being careful to X the 'don't want marketing boxes'
He showed me how to use the accounts on line.
Job Done!
Got back in the car to hear The Archers cliff hanger and music - so all done in less than 12 minutes. Went home and logged on. Brilliant!Doing voluntary work overseas for as long as it takes .......
My DD might make the odd post for me0 -
looby-loo it sounds like the Nat West must have broken the law then if they did not fill out one of those forms...0

Glad to hear you had a good experience, did they ask you any questions you weren't happy with? or that may be considered an invasion on your privacy?0 -
If you work in a bank then you will know that the money laundering laws require you to just report suspicious activities for the person once to the correct authority. You only have to report the person once, you do not have to report them anymore and it is then left to the correct authorities to investigate it. Whether the bank raise their eyebrows makes no difference all they have to do (As would most other businesses that handle cash over a certain amount eg car dealers, insurance brokers and investment companies etc) is report it.
So through garages questions they learnt a bit about you and have no suspicions about your purchase so now need to do nothing, on the other hand they could just report everyone spend large amounts of cash on cars?
Take a look http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/MLR/controls.htm
I would say that"They include assessing the risks of your business being used by criminals to launder money; verifying customers’ identity; monitoring customers’ transactions and reporting suspicious activity to the Serious Organised Crime Agency (SOCA); keeping the right records; and ensuring you have appropriate internal management controls."
Regarding the op I think this may apply:"What is customer due diligence?
Customer due diligence is the term used in the Regulations for the steps that businesses must take to:- Identify the customer and verify their identity using documents, data or information obtained from a reliable and independent source.
- Identify any beneficial owner who is not the customer. This is the individual (or individuals) behind the customer who ultimately own or control the customer or on whose behalf a transaction or activity is being conducted.
- Where a business relationship is established, you will need to understand the purpose and intended nature of the relationship, for example details of customer’s business or the source of the funds. "

Garages have to report payments over a certain amount in cash, they do not have to ask you lots of questions about your lifestyle and wages etc they just have to report it. They do not have to refuse the sale they just report it0

Ok so what your saying is my suggestion was incorrect. As I said before it was a suggestion as to why they may have done. You obviously have more experience with garages than I do.0 -
The money laundering laws are simple, you do not refuse the sale whether it is a car sale, jewellery purchase, sale of an insurance product, investment etc etc you simply ensure report it to through the money laundering channels.0

I've said it before and I'll say it again, Why do people find the need to be difficult?? If you don't like the questions then GO SOMEWHERE ELSE. If every bank asks the same questions then DON'T USE THEM. It's not rocket science.
I will just clarify my position on this matter. All my posts are regarding op which is standard questions like Income, Marital status etc etc. Later when op mentioned that other question were asked on seperate paper form I haven't mentioned but i would probably agree that not all q's are relevant. Also questions about your baby are totally irrelevant.
The extract below is from my original post which you blatently haven't read properly: as you say, it's not rocket science.
I was not asked about my MARITAL status in the computerised part of the application - if I had been I would have answered the question. Later on I was asked about my RELATIONSHIP status which is personal. Equally I was not asked about my GROSS main source of income I was asked about my NET income from my part-time job, i.e. my spending money, and what I elect to spend it on. I clearly stated in my original post that these were over and above the standard application process.Just been to open a basic savings account which took an hour and a half (!!) including having the assistant manager come out and explain to me why I was 'required' to tell the advisor about my relationship status, net income, personal method of budgeting and lifestyle habits before I could open an account! This was in addition to the standard computerised applicationform which I was obviously happy to complete.Declutterbug-in-progress.⭐️⭐️⭐️ ⭐️⭐️0
