  • HI all- I am not BR but in a DMP -came on to read other threads though and this one is mind boggling!

What difference does it make if an account holder is BR as to whether they can use online banking?

    Nothing!!!

It's cheaper for banks to run online accounts- and phoning banks requires always a strong gin and tonic- I bank with HBOS and their security questions beggar belief-but no barclays are definitely up themselves at the moment being one of a small number of banks not surviving at the taxpayers expense.

    Switch banks- definitely!
now debt free and determined to maintain good spending habits and build savings

    Hi CheesyXXXX

We BR are not in your position, as only a few will even allow us a bank account, I do believe that Barclays are just trying to discourage BR's from applying not offering these services, only thing is like stated before once discharged the account goes back to the way it was before they started taking away the few perks the account offers. and six years later once all of this is clearly behind us BR's we still are only excepted by a few accounts. Like I have stated on more than one occassion BR's rights should not be labelled for life even criminals never have to declare their past after 10 years.

The only way I can get a fresh start is to move abroad where my BR will not follow me. I look forward to that day! Only than will I truely have a Newstart.

Am going in to try mu luck on Saturday

Hopefully as I'm already bankrupt it should go through ok and not closed / frozen in a few weeks.

Would be happy with co-op if they had a few more branches in better places and not a stupid electron card
I don't have a branch near me and have never needed to go into one. Paying in at the post office or posting cheques works well. As for the electron card they will soon be issuing Visa connect cards.

I had noticed that online banking does always has adverts encouraging me to apply for an overdraft, premier banking or a loan. However, it's not a crime to offer these services to a bankrupt - something I think banks don't understand. Fair enough they might not want to offer these services to bankrupts but you could argue that bankrupts probably owe less money than those who are in debt!

I don't understand how their systems are able to check for bankruptcy markers when a customer goes into online banking but the same system is unable to check for bankruptcy markers when a customer applies for a credit based product. Surely they should be using all their knowledge of the customer when opening new accounts or facilities?

Another thing about these supposed bankruptcy markers, I think they can only be checking accounts as and when bankruptcies are announced and added to their systems. Whilst it is clearly affecting a small number of bankrupts, it isn't affecting all of us. Not yet anyway!
  • I went BR on 30/04 and have had access to online banking and was thinking that everything was hunky dory but unfortunately mine got taken away today as well :(

I haven't read all the posts on this subject so sorry if I'm repeating what has been said before.

I went BR on 18th March. I applied for the basic barclays account a few days prior and it came through about 2 or 3 weeks later. I called into a branch a few weeks ago to enquire about opening an account for my son. They asked if I had an account with them and to cut a long story short, offered to change my card from cash card to visa and to add internet banking and to give me a savings account. All of this has now gone through and I rec'd my pin and card this week with my registration card for online banking. I'll have to see if I get to keep it then! I'm not worried though as I love my co-op account and can't imagine I'll ned to go to branch as the Post Office is easier than the 25 mile drive to branch.

To give everyone an update on this, I spoke to a guy called Tim in the bankruptcy section of their legal department.

Policy has been changed so that as soon as a bankruptcy marker is put on the account, both online banking and automated telephone banking facilities are withdrawn. This is because - according to Tim - the online banking system allows you to apply for credit facilities. Normally these would be declined but there have been one or two instances where the system has not bothered checking and given an overdraft to a bankrupt - so to prevent this from happening in future, they are now disabling online banking for all bankrupts.

After 3 months, Barclays finally stopped my on-line banking facility today. I suspected this could happen, after reading this thread.

    Bummer

Has anyone successfully appealed this? I spoke to the legal team but I don't think it'll be worth the effort to try.

If you don't mind me asking, when did you open the Barclays account and when did you go bankrupt?

    Sorry for the late reply.

    I went BR on March 6th (2009)
    Account opened March 25th.
So it took them a little over 2 months to catch up.
On-line banking was good while it lasted
