maxdp, what about a rescue dog. My daughter goes to our dogs home most sundays (although not the last few cause of the boggy walk) but there are so many she comes home with videoed on here mobby and they are so sweet and although not "pups" I would go for one tomorrow. Often they only need the attention that you would give to a pup and some don't have probs at all. Its just been a sad case of homes breakdowns etc. Give it some thought. There are so many wanting a bit of love and patience. I would find it more rewarding I think.

Also one thing I would definately add here is to get your dog used to the vet. We have had more probs than anything there. He has to be muzzled and is still being treated now and it makes me bad when I HAVE to go with him. He used to be ok just for jabs but now he is so aggressive its unbelieveable. Its only been since his eyes have been painful for him. Also socialising a dog is very important although mine was socialised but just took it upon himself to be a little on the unsociable side himself but he is fine if he feels no fear from someone. That has been more to do with having a little bossy dog (my lhasa) who is definately the alpha male. Its been hard for my border as he was taken under the little ones wing from day one and I think when he is out he finds that its the only time when he can assert himself without the little one butting in.

It is a big responsibily having a dog and we were OK money wise when we had ours but things have gone down hill since. Its the same when having kids in that some although already cannot afford one go on to have another (and the state look after them but not with dogs). I would definately take out insurance too as its a must have and we have realised that but we DID have it and had to cancel after things got hard money wise (FP LOAN). Got it back up and running again and had to make cut backs even more on our everyday spending.

Don't do it unless you want total unconditional love for all ITS life:D. I love animals and have to say more than some people or probably MOST people - that is bad but i have felt like this all my life. My daughter and me were watching the Flintstones yesterday and it was a scene whereby Wilma's mum was tied up on the floor and also Dino. We both went "arrhh" at Dino and then my daughter said "why did we do that at Dino but not at the human???".

You will not regret it Maxdp. Dogs are fab and even mad ones like mine. My border has been lots of trouble since day one and we were even advised to have him PTS but I could never have done it. He has given this house so much love and so many laughs. A dog is for LIFE and not just for christmas. Mine is not the ideal breed though and I rushed when we got him but I would not swap him for the world. My little one, the lhasa is ace too but really is not so much fun cause he sleeps a lot. He is 12 now and the border 9.
Thanks for that. Fancy both you and your daughter going arh over the Dino:D

I know it is such a responsibility that is why I have been thinking about it really. We were also getting two kittens so they can grow up together. Had four cats but over the last couple of years they have died of old age. House is getting bit empty really with the kids being 17 and 15 and out a lot more. Think it must be empty nest syndrome:o

I had thought about a rescue dog. Two of my others were rescue dogs so a bit older and they were lovely. I think this time I just really fancied a chocolate labrador. It is something I have always fancied really. I had an German Shepherd when I was about 6 till 21. Since then I have had a rescue labrador and a rescue cross labrador German Shepherd.

The kittens I am getting from our local cat rescue centre. I told them about the pup and they said it was a good idea to get them together as they will grow up together.

I understand about the socialising others have said that to me before and I am going to make sure I do all I can. Sometimes though I think it can just be the basic personality of the animal. One of my cats who was a real grumpy old mare had to go into the vets a couple of years ago and they said she was evil. they put a DANGEROUS ANIMAL sticker on her cage. Anyway a year later she had to have all her teeth out so she was not such a risk.
