  • I have been away over the Easter weekend staying with non Old Style family. And although I am pleased with all the old styling I have managed to implement in my own house it was sooo different being in houses on where money is spent on quality not quantity.

    Examples are:

My sister putting a washing on for 2hrs (I do most of mine on a 30 min cycle) and using really lovely smelling high quality fabric conditioner (I use a small amount of cheap n cheerful)

Quality bread -Lovely seeded bread at £1.60 a loaf (and it really is lovely bread)

Good quality butter - really really so much tastier than the cheap spread I buy.

High quality bedding and towels - beautiful 100% high thread count cotton and probably the best part of £60/80 for one quilt set and one small bale.

    Branded soap, cosmetics and toiletries.

I could go on and on and on but I think that you get the drift.

The problem is I am now back at home and using all the downgrades I have - and I am yearning for the finer things. I am not normally a materialistic person - and I have never missed the items as I downgraded gradually but when it is seen as a whole I cant help feeling I am missing something.

I do not know if this even makes sense to anyone but some words of wisdom and a kick up the bum would be appreciated. Get me back in the mood for OS.

Then told DH i need 2hrs to myself to tidy up, thinking he could watch kids.... no reponse was ok i'll go and read for abit . Still managed to blitz BR, bedroom, toy corner (black sack of !!!!), DD's BR, downstairs loo:T. 5 loads of washing form y'day put away.

We've been to Jamaica for tea tonight Jerk Chicken with rice and peas along with a good dowsing of Hot Pepper Sauce, blooming lovely i gotta say

  • Hello Buddingblonde,
I can understand that after being spoilt you will find it difficult to go back to your frugal way, but tell me was your sisters washing any cleaner than yours? Did you sleep better because of the finer sheets?
When I was feeling hard done by I used to have a bath put on clean clothes and make myself a cup of tea in my very best china.
Could you not do something similar? Ask for your favourite toiletries & cosmetics for your birthday but keep them for best. Treat yourself now & again to the "posh" loaf or the "good" butter you'll appreciate them all the more for having them as treats.

If there is one single thing that you would really appreciate ( and you can afford it ), maybe you should treat yourself.

I think we all feel a little hard done to at times, it's natural :o

Sometimes I take a minute to think about all the great things in my life, DS, DD, DH, my crazy hounds etc :rotfl: I know it sounds silly, but it helps :D

It makes sense to me, but you don't need a kick up the bum.

Old Style is not about using the cheapest, it's about getting the most for your money.....So here goes.

Make your own bread, you'll soon be making loaves as good as any shop bought ones. You'll even be making bread that can't be bought in shops.

Stop buying spread and start buying the cheapest butter you can find, there probably won't be much difference in the price but there will be a big difference in taste.

Make your own soap, it's not hard, or expensive.

Bedding/towels, look out for the sales, you can get good stuff cheaply these days if you are prepared to search round.

Work wasn't too bad today - i think i may have been (slightly) motivated after Easter break - lasted until about 9.15am!!!

Sausage sarnie for tea tonight - couldn't really be bothered with anything more time consuming! :o Made some egg mayonnaise for lunches tomorrow - added some chopped up cold bacon!! Yummy!! If you haven't tried it - you really should!

Our dog had her first shower of the year at the weekend - tee hee - shes all cute and fluffy now! Bless!

Sunnygirl - ill keep everything crossed for you and your parents tomorrow x

    Hi Buddingblonde,

I know what you mean - if you can afford a little bit more why not look for the middle ground.

For instance we much prefer charmin toilet rolls, bounty kitchen rolls and radox shower gel and hand wash but I stock up when they are on offer, that way they probably still cost a little more than non-brands but it is just a small amount.

As for bedding and towels I love really soft ones but I have found that you can get really high count cotton bedding and the softest of towels from TK Maxx at very reasonable prices.

Unless you really are on a very low income and I apologise to those who are then you can make economies but still have good quality items. I think that it is still sticking to OS principles - looking for a bargain is what it's all about.

Sunnyday do you put any veg in the slow cooker when you do yours (seems some people do others don't)

    Evening Peeps,

Nic - I used to put veg in but now i prefer to cook the meat on its own and then drain the liquid into a jug and cool to get the fat to raise to the top. I can scrape it off then and make a lower fat soup :D
I bung it all back into a pan with the veg and some extra stock made from a cube so that there is lots. TBH there`s not usually much fat in the liquid so either way would be fine. I hate taking the skin off the meat as it`s so fatty at first and i think that this is whats made me do the liquid differently - mainly psycological :o
Try both ways and see which you prefer cos when you find out how lovely the meat is you will definitely get another one.

Sunny Girl - Sorry to hear that your Dad has to stay in hospital longer, fingers crossed that he`s home soon.

MSD - You were right :o BUT i only bought 2 packs of seeds :D The garden centre is a little family run local one and quite expensive but it is a little treasure of a place. I love to go at Christmas as its almost magical.

Well i spent most of the day with Dad and really enjoyed it, i`ve done nowt that i should have done except cleaned some tiles in the bathroom and make food and i`m back at w*rk tomorrow. No clothes have been ironed and i`m plonked on my backside with a glass of wine and some Hendersons relish crisps :D there is also a huge bottle of gin with my name on it :D

    Have a good evening folks.
