Teachers demand 10% pay rise

One of the biggest teachers' unions in England and Wales is demanding a pay rise of 10% or at least £3,000, whichever is greater.
Delegates at the annual National Union of Teachers conference backed the call despite warnings it would be unseemly when people are being made redundant.

Are they having a laugh? 10 percent? When everyone else is either getting laid off or wages frozen?

But 21 days holiday a year that can only be taken during non term time.

Public sector unions completely out of touch with reality.

Where are the tax revenues going to come from to fund this increase that they want?

Everyone else is performance managed on results. But not teachers it seems.

Exactly. They should have their pay frozen and be thankful that they aren't suffering like the majority that work in the private sector.

Sorry I dont agree with the comments on here. Im a trainee primary teacher and teachers are some of the hardest working people I have. It is no 9-5 job, it is 7am - 11pm job, plus weekends, plus some of the holidays. People see teachers as having it easy with the 'long' holidays - but you dnot get to enjoy half of them as you are busy planning, assessing, marking etc. Teachers have to prove themselves in their job like everyone else, they get observed in school and externally and need to meet the grade. As a teacher there is no moment to cut off it is very different to other professions. 10% may seem a lot but they deserve it, after all, if it was so easy why does everyone not become one? I also think other professions deserve it too, such as nurses or carers.

this is news to me! I qualify as a secondary school teacher roughly three months and wasn't aware of the request for a payrise.

Although, I do feel the need to mention:

- Yes you can get paid princely for the job, i know teachers who are on well over 40k, not all of which do a great job either.
- Yes we get more holidays than most.

However, perhaps it's because i'm enthausiastic and committed? But i spend 90% of my school holidays, every night after school and the majority of weekends doing school related work! I don't begrudge it, because i enjoy the job. I just felt the need to say it's not all chilling out on more holidays than others!
