    Hi KE7285,

They will keep in an airtight container in the fridge for about a week but I normally do the same as MUMOF4 and stick them in the freezer in a freezer bag and just lift out what I need when I need them.

I've added your thread to the main one on making homemade breadcrumbs to keep the replies together.

    These threads may help too:

    Freeze breadcrumbs

What can I do with breadcrumbs?

Hi again, very, very embarrassing question:o I have decided to make meatloaf for hubbies lunch, however when googling for a recipe they have asked for breadcrumbs, How do I make bread crumbs? Do they have to be cooked?

    Many thanks

Put bread in a food processor and whizz it till it's crumbs. If you don't have a FP you can do it by hand but it will obviously take a long time. You wouldn't need to cook it before use unless the recipe says to, as it will soak up the meat juices etc and help to keep the dish together as it cooks.

Oh dear, here we go again.
  • If it's the dry heel of an uncut loaf you could grate it if you have no food processor. Or if it's a sliced loaf leave some slices out for a few hours to dry out a bit but you don't need the breadcrumbs to be completely smooth as once you've mixed it well with your hands it should combine with the meat OK.

One of the recipes for meatloaf an American family I used to know added tomato ketchup to the mixture for a bit more flavour and a few dashes of Worcestershire Sauce/Lee & Perrins is good, too.

Thank you jennyjelly and bitterand twisted for your suggestions about the breadcrumbs, I have never made them before, have wizzed them in the FP! Hubbie and I just had the meatloaf and it was delicious, I added a pinch of various herb and a few teaspoons of mustard powder and a handfull of diced onions, yummy. I will try adding tom ketchup next time , thank you bitterandtwisted.

    How long will breadcrumbs keep?
  • Dont know about keeping them fresh as opposed to freezing, but will keep for quite some time in the freezer.

Just had a look at the price of them in Morrisons and they range from 60p up to £1.50!!

If they're at room temperature then they should be OK for the the same sort of time a piece of bread would - i.e. three or four days (it doesn't matter if they go stale, but you don't want them going mouldy).

If you stick them in the freezer they'll last pretty muxh indefinitely - I have a bag full in the freezer and just top it up whenever I've got some unwanted bread, so some crumbs have probably been in there for several months!

Back after a very long break!
