Have I missed it? or has anyone mentioned Tiger Balm for aches and pains?0

I asked the question originally so I could condense my medicine 'shelf' into something more manageable and less space consuming.. but now I think its going to grow haha.. I have almost made a shopping list of things I now must 'add' to our first aid kit... and thats without all the 'alternative' medicines I want to introduce ... just incase we ever need it... haha
Thanks to everyone for revealing theirs!

Hi all
Looking at putting a first aid box together but don't want to spend a fortune. What would your essential items be? Two toddlers in the house to consider as well.
Thanks0 -
Washable plasters, large tube of Savlon (heals almost anything )junior asprin,Calpol.bottle of witchhazel (excellent for bruises)some gauze pads, micropore sticking plaster some cotton wool I always kept a couple of small lollypops in the first aid box as rewards for brave toddlers who had fallen over .a bump doesn't seem so bad if you have a bit of 'magic cream' (savlon) on it a big cuddle and a lollypop. My two DDs are 44 & 46 and they still have Savlon 'Magic cream'

- Sticky forehead thermometer
- Calpol (or 'own brand') - age appropriate type
- Age appropriate Cough Linctus ('own brand' with nice taste)
- 'Magic' (Savlon-type) antiseptic cream
- 'Magic' antiseptic wipes
- Assorted size sealed plasters - both waterproof AND fabric - once those 'strips of plasters' are unwrapped they're no longer 'sterile' and can carry germs/bugs.
- Rehydrat sachets - for when people have tummy bugs
- Paracetamol for adults
- Antihistamine cream for bites/stings etc
- I'd also include some Calamine Lotion - though GP's don't give this out any longer. Comes in handy for soothing itchy rashes and sunburn.
- If your children are school-age, I'd also include something for the dreaded 'nits' - cos when it's needed, it's needed NOW!;)
oops - I took so long over that post that JackieO beat me to it.
Love the idea of the lollypops, Jackie!0 -
I would also put in a little pot labelled "Fairy Dust" for when your toddlers don't actually need first aid but just need a little bit of cheering up!:)0

I always kept an empty ice cream tub as a sick bowl. Once the sickness was over it was washed and recycled and another tub emptied ready for use.A nit comb is essential always used it once a week on hair with conditioner and kept the nasty nits away from 3 kids.My secret fantasy is having 2 men....

Check out the British Red Cross, St. Johns Ambulance and Health & Safety Executive for the contents of their kits.
My domestic kit meets all three of their specifications for one person, my car kit for 2 to 10 persons.
PS. Strictly speaking, medicines shouldn't be included in a first aid kit. For example, antiseptic cream (ie. Savlon) contains cetrimide, and the first cases of allergic reaction to this were so severe, that they were misdiagnosed as self-harm.If you fold it in half, will an Audi A4 fit in a Citroen C5?

I don't have a first aid kit per se, but just a "medicine drawer" in the kitchen. I try and keep it well stocked with medicines I know I'm likely to need at some point (I know my body, and know what I suffer from), and various different types of plasters.
For instance, I know I'll always be grateful for cold and flu meds, Imodium, Motilium (for a delicate/upset tum), Strepsils & Ibuprofen. Oh, and Bonjela for mouth ulcers.Because it's fun to have money!
