My DD is a trained First Aider and has a very comprehensive first aid kit (kept in her car). Her "extras" include heat and cold packs, a large burns dressing, CPR mouth guard and face shield, foil blankets and eye wash vials. She also keeps a large bottle of water in the car, a torch, hi-vis waistcoat and disposable plastic gloves.
She drives quite a lot and often sees emergency services attending accidents - she's just paranoid about being first on the scene and not being properly equipped to help.
"Cheap", "Fast", "Right" -- pick two.

The vapu-rub type stuff is a tisserand aromatherapy one which i have had for ages, it was from boots. It is a lot less 'harsh' than the standard things like this but it is as effective.
The homeopathic pharmacy is a little box with 24 of the commonest remedies, which are fine as long as you know enough about homeopathy to use them correctly;) I won that in a competition, it has been v useful, especially for the children;)

  • Hi Everyone,

My Pantry has a shelf overflowing full of 'off the shelf' medicines... for example - flu remedies, calpol, pain killers, vitamins.. plasters, lotion of when DS had chickenpox etc etc. I am wanting to reduce this shelf to a medicine box - and wonder what other people would 'never be without' so I can use this as a basis for my 'staple medicine'.

We have no regular medicines, and despite how it sounds, very rarely suffer from colds etc etc..

Any ideas would be great !.

    Thank you! :A

    Hi honeypie,

There's an older thread with lots of ideas that should help so I've added your post to it to keep all the suggestions together.

My work-issued first aid kit (that lives under my desk) contains:

    dressing scissors, triangular bandage, plasters
Sterile face shield for resusitation, plus it's little portable equivalent
    Emrgency aid booklet
    eye patch
    Finger bob bandages
    safety pins
    Gloves
    antispetic wipes
    sterile dressings in various sizes

I also have a biohazard bag and a portable sharps bin in mine, but these aren't standard issue. Other stuff specialist stuff like saline and calcium gluconate is available depending on what we are doing.

My home kit contains all of the above plus:
    tweezers
    biohazard bag
    pound coin
    antihistamines
over the counter pain killers (various)
    Glycerine
    thraot tablets
    rehydration sachets
    condoms, tampons, sanitary towels
    paper bag
    burns dressings
    Saline eye wash in vials
various other bits like DEET, which don't get used often, but at least I know where they are!

In my handbag I carry a small plastic pocket that contains:
    Small portable face shield
    plasters
    plastic gloves
    small would dressing
    Antiseptic wipe
    Aspirin

I think tea tree oil is a great must have and I always take some with me when I travel along with a pair of tweezers. between the two of those I could take on the world if necessary lol ;)

Oh yes and a regular clearout to find things which have gone off/past their date is essential. And a sign the kids are getting bigger - soluble paracetamol has replaced the calpol
I have a rescussitation mask too from a first aid course but i dont take it out anywhere, and anyway would not use it at home as that would only be my nearest and dearest or people I know anyway.
The old fashioned bronchial mixture works a treat on kids who are milking it a bit and as we know there is no remedy for the cold, but that stuff stops them asking for medicine LOL;)
