thankyou so much for that bladesuk1, really found your advice useful. One thing I was wondering, as the amp is pretty low power is it possible to hook the guitar upto say a high-fi system amp, or is this a big no no? Its just that my other half has a pretty meaty denon system (about £3ks worth and pretty powerful) and I was wondering if it would be useful to hook the guitar upto this rather than forking out for a new amp, or will it sound pants? One other thing I wanted to ask is whether the cables are important for quality or do you think what is shipped with the kit fine for now? :)

    Edit:

Just been looking at picks, how confusing! What pick size would you recommend for a beginner, or should I try a variety to see what suits? Theres so many to choose from Nylon, Steel, Aluminium, Bronze....blimey what a choice!!

BladesUK1 - Thank you for taking the time to type in all the advice.
It is a great help for novices like me who may mistake a cheap price for good value.

If you are really serious about playing the guitar don't buy from E-Buyer. The free-ads are jammed full of 'cheap strat copies' that nobody has had the patience to learn to play.

Go to your local guitar shop and try a few. They are not all the same.

Check out the Aria etc at https://www.hartnoll-guitars.co.uk for a good quality 'low cost' guitar

The 'guitar amp' is designed around the frquencies a guitar pickup produces so would not recommend hooking up to your home system. You might even damage the tweeters. Slightly more expensive amps will give you amp modelling such as distortion reverb chorus etc. Go for oxygen free cables as they produce less background noise. Use light gauge picks for strumming or light to medium for solo picking. Avoid heavy gauge as these tend to bite in to the strings. If you are serious about playing dont buy a package and spend a little more on a ggod amp. You'll get more enjoyment.

 Hey, this looks like a great offer but be very wary of ebuyer! We spent loads with them over the years and then we had a problem - we didn't receive one item in our order. They're incredibly unhelpful - they basically called us liars and said they'd be contacting the police! That was when we eventually managed to get a reply - it's almost impossible to get an answer on the phone and they don't answer their e-notes. Thankfully we'd paid by credit card and all credit to Capital One - they sorted it out for us with no hassle! :j
I don't usually do forums but I'm so mad with ebuyer and if I can stop anyone else having similar problems then great! They appear cheap and if you don't have to contact them then it's ok but heaven help you if you have problems!By the way, I hear they're being investigated by Trading Standards :T
About a year ago I bought a TV from ebuyer. It was listed as a totally flat screen but it wasn't. They eventually did reply to me enote and said I could send it back. but to be honest it would have cost a fortune to do that and would have been a right pain in the arris so I just kept it. I gave it a bad review but they just took it off. Ebuyer are cheap but a nightmare when things go wrong I am told.

don't, whatever you do, plug your guitar into your soundcard as the impedances are completely wrong, and you could fry the card and/or your speakers. you need a specific bit of kit for that, or a high end guitar-oriented soundcard.

That's funny, I've been using my soundcard to amplify my guitar for a few months now - not because it's louder - but simply for the huge range of effects that are available through my computer. I haven't had any problems at all, and my sound card certainly isn't a top-of-the-range one, its a 5 year-old bog-standard soundblaster!

I know people who have hooked their acoustic electric guitar to a standard sound card input without problem, dont know about normal electric guitars though. How are these online guitar tuners such as http://www.aptuner.com supposed to work if you arent supposed to hook your guitar upto your pc soundcard line in?

It's only £50 odd so if you want to try a guitar for very little it's a bargain. The amp sounds plenty loud enough in the home and two kids and one adult can make a hell of a racket and have a lot of fun. Eric Clapton & Jimi Hendrix started on cheap guitars and it didn't stop them turning out to be quite good.

As for ebuyer - they are cheap. Enough said. The service won't be great because corners are cut but I've returned faulty goods easily, albeit slowly. “Cousin Hilda” – your post, your one and only post I note, is dangerous. Trading Standards investigating ebuyer?? Why???

It's not good to make scurrilous accusations without substantiating them - libellous accusations could be very painful for Martin and the site. I suggest that post is either modified or removed.

I personally use Planet Waves cables, they cost £20 a piece, are gold plated and spring loaded and I can't reccomend them enough (though a little pricey as I have 6 to patch my pedals), the sound is crystal clear with no feedback, however, I have not tried them on a "budget guitar" and I don't think I could justify spending that on my first guitar......perhaps for your second ;) . Fact is, the standard lead will work, but I would reccomend getting a new one because those cheap ones you get in package deals sound pretty bad and break after a while....you can pick a basic one up for a fiver in your local guitar shop which would be suffice, though IMHO.....stay clear of Fender leads, I bought a pretty expensive one off them and it just broke each time, and I got it replaced, the last time the music shop refused to replace though

As for plectrums, I use Sharkfin guage R :T they are super flexible and are great.....though a lot of people don't like that  again, it really is best to go in to your local music shop and look in the pick tray at the counter and look for what feels good to you, ask to try them out on the most expensive guitar they have in  you will get one in the package though.
