    My husband currently has 2 employees on maternity leave, he has to pay them aswell as employing others to do their jobs. In other words he is paying four people to do two peoples jobs!

    92% is recoverable from the Inland Revenue, in the case of small employers they can also claim additional compensation costs, so he is not paying 4 people to do 2 peoples jobs. He is paying 2 people to do 2 peoples jobs.

    You can't refuse to give someone a job based on age or gender. His business partner was back at her desk a week after giving birth, not everyone uses kids as an excuse to sit at home.

    Tbh I doubt the 'authenticity' of this statement, after giving birth your movement is restricted concentration anad memory are also impaired most likely to the extent that you are 'use nor ornament'.

    As if having kids is 'sitting around at home', little matters such as nappy changing , feeding and dare I say it loving your child all 'get in the way' of sitting around.

    I don't doubt the 'business partner' returned to work quickly after child birth but there are likely to be other factors involved.

    I like this, it's made me laugh :D

    I will point out though that after giving birth I would have been capable to sit at a desk and do some kind of computer based work - it didn't turn me into an immobile moron :p obviously the feeding/changing/cuddling 'got in the way' of this but if I'd handed my baby straight to a nanny I'd have been able to (though why anyone would is beyond me!!???)

    I am currently setting up a business, so no I wouldn't expect someone to pay me to stay at home. My husband and I are financially secure and would never become scroungers.

    Not sure what you're getting at here, but it is not a good time to be setting up a business there just happens to be the biggest banking crisis for 80 years atm.

    The people being 'paid to sit around doing nothing' and 'scrounging' happen to be;

    - not sitting around doing nothing
    - to be in receipt of SMP they would have to have been in employment and therefore have paid tax
    - they are likely to return to work in the future, earn money and pay tax.

    I'm still not sure as to why you persist in parent bashing.

    Sadly it appears that Grace does not have the good grace to return to this thread & admit she was talking rubbish about the cost of Maternity pay to employers.

    What kind of business are you starting Grace? I truly hope you wont have any employees.
    Thanks to all who post comps :A :T
