Ljubjana in Slovenia is nice and chilled out, with a couple of good day trips.

Dubrovnik in Croatia comes highly recommended too, although it's very expensive inside the old town. There's this beautiful island only a 10-minute boat ride away that has gorgeous rocky beaches. It's only a small island and easy to walk around in a day, but I found loads of places where there were virtually no people. :D

Since going there in March, I've got to recommend Tenerife. As long as you don't spend your stay near the centre of Las Americas then there's plenty of Canarian culture to be seen, but the British bars are there for the nights when you can't be bothered to speak Spanish.
  • For a more sophisticated holiday, Chatham in Kent, or any of the Medway towns are wonderful chav-free UK getaways.

If you want to go somewhere that is not overwhelmed by English culture due to Tourism then the Costa de la Luz in Spain is a fantastic place to go :-) Beautiful beaches, lovely weather and still very Spanish as this is where the Spanish love to holiday. Take a Spanish dictionery with you and try out the local lingo - the locals are all really welcoming and help you with your language skills.

You can flights with Ryanair to either Jerez, Seville, Malaga, Gibraltar.

www.costa-luz-holiday.com has loads of info on the area.
  • My top chav free destinations are................

    SANTORINI,PORTOFINO, SCILIY,CORSICA,SARDINIA(PARTS OF),CAPRI, POSITANO,NECKER ISLAND,NAPA VALLEY,ROME,VENICE,VALENCIA,MONTE CARLO,CANNES, ABU DHABI, OMAN, AND SANDY LANE BARBADOS, TO NAME A FEW.

What do all of these places I have visited, have in common??? I saw no chavs, unless they were lottery winning ones!

Unfortunately, Dubai has now been lost to them and the Russians who seem to have taken over nowdays, what was originally a fantastic holiday destination.

My favourite chav-free destination close to home is Llafranc in Spain, it's on the Costa Brava but quite far North away from all the riff-raff. It's where the well-off Barcelona jet-set have their holiday homes and is beautiful. It's a nice little town with a lovely beach (and you can walk round the headland to the next beach), and a prom for walking on in the evening and mixing with the (beautiful) Spaniards. You can fly in to Girona or Barcelona (either Ryanair or Easyjet I forget which), then hire a car cheaply. Worth having a car as there are some beautiful coves up and down the coastline that are worth exploring.
It really is a stunning area, and well worth a visit. Some nice little boutique hotels on the sea front.

There are mainly Spanish holiday makers (especially at weekends, when they drive up from Barcelona), some French, and some English. But they are all well spoken, quiet, and not a mug of tea or football shirt in sight!

the Languedoc in the south of France offers all you're looking for, or should I say NOT looking for. We love it so much we now live here
    History - Roman, Cathars etc
Good Food, and great value. We often have a 3 course lunch with wine for under 15 euros
Wine - vineyards everywhere, vineyard tours and tastings
Traditional sleepy villages, Stunning scenery... I could go on

And because there are no package holidays here it's not a mass market bucket and spade type holiday destination.

I've never been to Sardinia or Corsica, but understand both of those are beautiful and fairly unspoiled, and Venice, Florence and Rome are mainly full of Americans, who you might find less irratating.

How about somewhere in Provence/ the South of France?

Hi, I totally second Pee - visited Florence, it so so beautiful and you can do trips out to the countryside which is fab. Hardly any brits and gorgeous weather, and plenty to do in a week
