Better get in quick cancelling Setanta if your planning to. If things don't work out for them they will be out of business very soon.

They tried to stitch me up when I signed up to a £20 for Setanta Sports 1 for the football season. I paid by debit card, then they kept ringing and sending me letters to set up a direct debit "for their records". - Not a chance.

No sympathy for them from me.

I hadn't seen this thread until I'd already phoned Sky to cancel movies and sports - got a 50% reduction on my Sky World package for the next 3 months, so that's saved me about £60. Will probably cancel for real next time round (unless of course they offer up another deal).

Don't get these people who turn on Sky when they don't get offered a deal, it's the luck of the draw really, and they are running a business at the end of the day (a very profitable one nonetheless) so don't technically have to offer you anything.

This is the second time I've had Sky - I was an early adopter and in 3 years of having it, I only paid full subs for 12 months, the other 24 months were on some form of deal (half price, free etc.) so here's hoping they really do want to keep a customer who is currently spending circa £70/month...if not, hell I save money either way :D
  • Stupid question from n00b time:

If I cancel, and they take away all my Sky, will I have to get some kind of freeview box? And is this likely to mean me buying a new aerial (I've heard people having to pay c.£300 for this)? If this is the likely scenario, it's going to be cheaper just to keep it.

I pay £55.75 a month for whole package plus multi room, rang sky yesterday asking to cancel sky sports ( didnt really wanna cancel) got chatting to the guy about footy ect... he did me a deal of £15 off my package for 2 months. Didnt think he would do better than that so i just said yes. Better than nothing i guess...

Oh forgot to mention , he said bassically they do this deal because so many people cancel sky sports during the summer because of no footy then come august/september the phone lines are jammed with people trying to reconnect to sky sports , so they offer deals to keep people connected so as to not jam the lines in sept.

I rang and removed Sports and Movies from mu subscription today, was offered nowt but that didnt really bother me as I really am not interested in the summer sports that sky will be showing, if they had offered anything it would have been a bonus.

Instead of £62 my next bill will be £16.50.

No they do it so they can inflate the costs of advertising slots for high profile events such as the Ashes and Lions Tour based on the number of subscribers that can receive the channel and potentially will watch. It dosnt bother Sky if phone lines are jammed expecially when you can resubscribe by Sky Active and online, but receiving less for a 30 second slot during the breaks does bother them.

Just cancel and go onto Sky without subscription. Will only cost you an extra £20 if you want the viewing card for the encrypted free to air channels, otherwise it's free as you already have the dish and box.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

Wont even cost the £20, your current viewing card would enable the FTV channels (until a card changeover which we are in the middle of now)

I called Sky to cancel Sky Sports, telling them I didn't know if I would renew at the end of the summer or not, and was offered a £30 credit (i.e. Sky Sports for £4 for two months). They didn't offer the 20% off for 6 months. I canceled it in the end as that's £38 saved for 2 months rather than £30 and I'm not fussed about not having it for a while.
