  • as it's a bank you're with £10k shouldn't be a problem, building societies don't tend to hold a generous reserve - you may not even have to give notice for that amount, usually £20k & above would need 24 hours notice but it maybe down to the branch local procedures, small branches may not carry as much as the town centre branches - your bank card & a photocard driving licence or valid uk passport should be sufficient - Happy Motoring!!

Since the advent of Chip & Pin reduced card fraud by as much as 85% in the first trials in France, Identity Fraud "is the new black this season" - the fraudsters have moved onto ID fraud as their main objective & its growing rather rapidly in the UK, hence the need for stingent checks for large amounts "to draw out your own money" , all they are doing is safeguarding your funds by ascertaining that the customer who's asking for the £10k from Mr M Mouse a/c is Mickey himself. And it's not just the financial institutions, but all walks of life, we moved house in the summer & used our usual solicitor who we are on 1st name terms with & still had to bring our passports in for the ID procedures, it's just safeguarding your identity and money - I would be more concerned about how safe my money is if I waltzed into a branch and they gave me £10k without a single check

As for the photocopies, it's no different than all the cheques that you issue or signed debit/credit card slips, they are stored for a period of time then incinerated, or pulped for recycling

After all the staff have had a good laugh at the photo, and drawn moustaches on it we use it for dart board practise in the staff room.

I would ask the garage how they would like to be paid.

That's a really good point actually. When we bought a brand new car recently, I saw a notice on the dealer's wall stating that due to money laundering regulations they would refuse to accept cash for values in excess of £5,000. They would rather customers used a card or bank transfer.

Good point. I don't have an account with HSBC anymore, but when I did I paid for a car about two years with my switch card. The ammount was £7000. If you are buying from a dealer this may be the siplest as you have the money in your account
  • When I needed to withdrawl £5,000 for a car, I rung the branch a day before just to check it was ok to withdrawl such an amount in one transaction and they agreed. Once I arrived at the bank, they asked me to sign various forms and asked for ID (Driving Licence) and they gave me the money in what form I wanted (I was tempted with £5 notes just to buy the car using a briefcase, but opted for £50 notes!)

My bank is Lloyds - by Im sure they are all pretty much the same.

If you are happy to have your civil liberties reduced to draw out your own money ,fine, and your pass-port is not the same as a cheque
