I can see both sides to this debate, my stats isn't up to the challenge but if 10 people get it right I assume the computer will flick through the ten randomly to select the one that will receive the email to say they've won, if it's only 5 then you are twice?? as likely it will select you out in cyberspace. That said I've got a couple of answers from posters that I would never have got, god bless them and all who sail in them, it's a bit of redistribution, a bit of socialism a good concept that sadly went out of fashion even in the Labour party and look where that got us and where it will get us when the real Tories get in. SPOILER ALERT answer coming.....
So day 14 answer is AIRPORTS, I went to the short story link which actually helped me for once, it's all about Brian Eno and one of his avant garde music projects.I think whilst your explanation of the probability of winning a sweepstake with only 4 people involved would seem to make sense it doesn't really relate to situations where the number of entrants is a lot higher.
You're correct if there are only one or two entrants they have either a 100% or 50% chance of winning. However judging by this thread there are more than one or two people entering the competition so the odds of winning aren't as attractive or meaningful.
Lets say 20,000 'legitimate' people enter the competition and know all the answers without the need to resort to this thread. Each person's chance of winning the main prize would be 0.005%. Far less than 1% and therefore not much chance of winning to be fair.
Now, let's assume 100 'scoundrels' go on the moneysavingexpert forum and steal the answers and they then enter the competition. This alters the odds of winning the main prize to 0.0049751%.
So, by being friendly, helpful and good spirited the people who have contributed answers to this forum have effected their chances of winning the main prize by 0.00002%. This is therefore not as 'hugely significant' as you believe it to be and...somehow I think that those posting the answers will find a way to learn to live with the consequences of their actions;)0 -
Redistribution is a lovely ideal. I think what is troubling some is that, in common with this country as a whole, a bunch of lazy chavs COULD, through no effort on their part whatsoever, ensure they get plenty of that redistribution by just playing the system.
I'm not saying that is occurring here (as I'm not a moaner) but I'm just suggesting that is what others might feel is happening here.0 -
re: "in common with this country as a whole" - Are you suggesting that only in the UK, do people take what they can get? I thought it was a global thing...Like giving, what you take.
I wish the chavs would moan about the elitist academic snobs a bit more.....Why don't they ever do that eh? Are they lazy? Has the education system battered them into passivity, do they live inside the whale?
I'm feeling, as I hope someone else is too, strangely bewildered by the thought that a simple answer sharing exercise on a web forum, relating to a painting giveaway... has ventured into a gross debate covering topics as broad as: religion, socialism, right & wrong, the class system, greed, humanism, the order of things, utilitarianism, capitalism, categorical imperatives, moral luck, probability, relativism, liberty, equality, forgery, aesthetic taste....I'm joyfully awaiting the appearance of the feminists, a kitchen sink, half-past three, Iran, and ummm... Robert Hughes, if i'm being totally honest.
Why do we say less, when the important issues occur....0 -

firstly to the art teacher (tabbycat), when has stating a opposing view on something been attention seeking?? does that mean every protester, government opposition, designer etc who does so is attention seeker?? i worry that you are responsible for teachin our youth and instilling these ridiculous theories into them!!
kohsumai- i think you just sum it all up!! i dont know if i can even be bothered to explain something so stupidly simple to you but here goes. i dont know if your aware but the euromillions is a purley random draw where each ticket has an equal chance of winning so noone "deserves" to win, where as this competition is based on people working out answers which enables you to achieve a better chance of winning thus rewarding the people that do so. if it were a equal random chance they would have just said register your name!! in which case people do "deserve" to win! and while were here just to clear it up for you yes the world isnt flat!!
it wasnt about social, political issues etc just simple fairness but as you highlight it yes it does perfectly reflect the society we live in today where the worthless layabouts, without any effort or contribution leach off the system into which hard working individuals are forced to support. in effect working hard all your life striving to achieve something doesnt really set you far apart from those who are willing to sit back and enjoy the fruits of your labour!!!
sorry was airports the answer today?? ; )0 -
Hi Jeanmd, I didn't say I would go away, I just said I wouldn't moan.
I've been lurking (biting my lip everytime some muppet asks for the answer when it's already been posted about 2 messages earlier. Or when they're so badly stuck and it's actually quite easy if you can be bothered to work out the clues provided). But they're people too and they are entitled to play the game as they see fit. And yes, you're right, I do love you all really.
I do try and keep up with current PC legislation but I'm often found lacking. Is 'chav' an awful word? I suppose it is but to be honest I would imagine most chavs are probably either too idle, too thick or too inebriated to even find this messageboard, so hopefully I've not offended any. If any have found their way here (there's a lot of spare time in prison isn't there?) I apologise for any offence I've caused. (Have they apologised for any offence they've committed??).
That's as much positivity as I can muster today :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:
Now, let's get out into the lovely sunshine and recharge my positive energy for this evenings tongue-biting!
Have a lovely day y'all...........0 -
Another term used for internet forums is online communities. Some of the posts I have seen on this thread are really trying to threaten that, clearly. Especially newbie posters who have probably signed up to post on this thread and ask for answers or just stir things up.
So someone's a chav because they need help on an answer? And I assume all of you on your high horses haven't entered any comps from here and used the answer the OP has already provided for you? If so, by your terminology, you're a chav and you don't deserve to win....as well as being a hypocrite.
I'm so fed up with people expecting things to be handed to them on a plate or to be that self-centered that they want to deprive others of fun or a chance to win a treat.
I post/share competitions on here I'd love to win for myself, complete with answers. I don't win a huge amount (yet!!) but I enjoy the feeling of helping other people and being part of a community.
Martin and the forum team have asked people time and time again to stop the petty b1tching and squabbling; this is his place, his rules and if you don't like it, you know where the Off button is on your computer. You won't be missed. We're all adults here; it's time some people started behaving like that. If you have a problem with what I've said, feel free to report me to abuse. I've said all I have to say on this matter and am referring this thread to abuse.0 -
Well i,m sitting on me sofa not in a council house but only since recently, watching corrie that i recorded couldnt bare to miss it , i have the gas fire on cos im always freezing and i have the fray bentons pie in the oven, any one saw me knitting needles:rotfl: but i didnt realise that the above things disqualified me for certain comps

I'm actually against censorship...Please let all people have an opinion. It's beneficial to a democratic society...Let's not suppress others, just because they are different.
The answers are still going to be posted.0 -
This is the 2nd abusive reply that has been posted today. yet its these people posting this abuse that are accusing others of doing so! when ifact these people have simply questioned the fairness of this thread!
i am very curious as to why being frustrated at putting effort into a comp for people to freeload is classified as not being an adult or attention seeking??0
