This is the 2nd abusive reply that has been posted today. yet its these people posting this abuse that are accusing others of doing so! when ifact these people have simply questioned the fairness of this thread!
i am very curious as to why being frustrated at putting effort into a comp for people to freeload is classified as not being an adult or attention seeking??0 -
laney85, I think skinback is refering to flickeringembers decision to tell Dad.
Basically, as I see it there is badcoverversion, fedresnut, and skinback with the "Posting the answers equates to cheating & immoral behaviour" idea. Everyone else is pretty much happy.0 -
in reply to skinback’s following comment:
“firstly to the art teacher (tabbycat), when has stating a opposing view on something been attention seeking?? does that mean every protester, government opposition, designer etc who does so is attention seeker?? i worry that you are responsible for teachin our youth and instilling these ridiculous theories into them!!”
I accept and appreciate what you say in your comment skinback.
“attention seeking” was not quite what I meant (bit sleepy and clumsy of me), maybe “disproportionately disruptive” is closer to what I was trying to say.
Thank you for holding the mirror up to me on that oneYou are quite right and I stand happily corrected.
A right to question you will be happy to hear I extend without reservation to my students too
I love group discussions and constantly encourage my students to confront and question mine and their own preconceptions, prejudices, and re-evaluate their understandings and expectations of what art (and hopefully everything else) is, isn’t and could be. It’s essential to the developing of the kind of critical awareness that makes interesting and exciting artists, thinkers, individuals. Provocative dialogue is an essential element to the best work of duchamp, warhol and even our beloved mr hirst (love them or loathe them, the ideas presented by their work are interesting and invaluable to any debate about what art is).
I would never deny you your voice or fail to value your contribution skinback. And on this occasion you caught me out (in part), which I quite like and thank you for.
I still stand by the point I was trying to make about community spirit and pulling together to achieve collectively what we can’t achieve on our own. But my glib parting last line about attention seekers was poorly framed. I was clumsy in my terminology and you encouraged me to reflect and re-evaluate for a moment when it’s appropriate to use the term ‘attention–seeking’ and when it isn’t. To err is human, to forgive divine.
I don’t ever want to feel infallible which is why I choose to work in a field in which my ideas are constantly questioned.
I just wanted to say something when I did because I felt the discussion was spiralling destructively and in danger of eclipsing the subject of the thread. Which is to allow people interested in the competition to compare their thoughts, feelings and ideas about the answers for the competition.
As the legendary oingo boingo has already commented, three people seem to be unhappy and everyone else (thousands) happy.
Communities (online or otherwise), like democracies, are about balancing the wants, needs and feelings of the majority against the wants, needs and feelings of minorities. In every community and democracy the minority view should always be considered carefully, valued and made a part of any decision making.
But when a minority resorts to destructive tactics that threaten the very existence of the community within which they exist (such as reporting this thread to the moderator in the hope of getting it closed altogether) democracy (unfortunately but unavoidably) has to bare it’s teeth in the interest of what is most representative of the greater collective will.
And, taking all comments made by those with opposing views into account, the greater collective will is indisputably with the thread continuing in its current purpose.
I like the thread existing as it is and doing what it does. And I actually like the ongoing debate. I find it thought-provoking, funny, sometimes enlightening and sometimes depressing. But overall I think it’s a healthy thing.
But if the aim of the anti’s debate is to not just to ‘state an opposing view’ but to destroy the thread as enjoyed by the majority, then I think the debate and the thread may have to be separated out.
I truly hope it isn’t.
Thanks again to skinback for tripping me up (just a bit, graze but no bruises) with my own words.
And I hope all fellow hirstcomp don’t spend too much of their sunny bank holiday weekend in front of the computer searching for the answers to this infernal but irresistible competition!

Christ there are some freaks on this thread - why don't you get a life ? My suggestion - pop in here daily to pick the answers up from someone who has kindly looked them up, and then get out in the sunshine and enjoy yourself, confident in the knowledge that you have an equal chance to win this comp, the same as everyone else.0

I can't help wondering whether some people have grasped the point of this forum. If you didn't want the answers, you wouldn't come here. Find your own comps, answer the questions, enjoy entering. I do it myself, frequently. But sometimes I don't have the time, or the energy, or I'm just lost for ideas, and then I come here for help from our friends.
I can't be bothered to enter this one.Enjoy.
