I spent a little while last night looking through some other competition threads, postal ones, text ones, dailies etc and I didn't coma across one other thread or posting with people name calling and shouting at each other about whether an answer is given or not. And on every post answers were given. So why all the hubbub on this thread? Give over now guys, its just a competition. And its a forum where people actually try, on the whole, to support each other. Those who are behaving like children - sit down and be quiet, stop being mean. And those who are here for genuine reasons and who have helped me on at least two occasions to get my answer right or at least spelt correctly - thank you.
To those who are given much, much is expected

I think youll find people are generally annoyed, and quite rightly so, that they are spending their time and effort working out these questions thinking they will have a good chance at winning, to then come on here and find people are getting the same chance for no effort.

I fail to see why that is behaving like children?? a nonsical comment and not really a great conteractive point!! not to mention slightly hypocrytical as you are posting a thread commenting on name calling.

Also i think most people arent "shouting" or "name calling" but merely asking the question..."why would you tell people to give yourself less chance??" because i for sure cannot find any kind of logic in it at all!

surely if you cant get the answers you shouldnt be able to win...it isnt a competition to see who can share and support other people the most!!

"im sorry also but i think youll find posting answers does effect your 'rate' of winning (bad english on your part but i know what you mean). here we go...

a sweepstake is set up with varying numbers of people that i enter.

me only = 100% chance of winning

            me + 1 person = 50% of me winning

            me + 2 people = 33.3% of me winning

            me + 3 people = 25 % of me winning

            and so on......

hopefully that will clear it up for you because i can guarantee that the numbers of people now entering as a result of the people posting answers on here is hugely significant.

can i lastly ask why should someone who cannot be bothered to spend the time and effort getting the answers have the same chance as someone who has spent the time and effort finding the answers??

I think whilst your explanation of the probability of winning a sweepstake with only 4 people involved would seem to make sense it doesn't really relate to situations where the number of entrants is a lot higher.

You're correct if there are only one or two entrants they have either a 100% or 50% chance of winning. However judging by this thread there are more than one or two people entering the competition so the odds of winning aren't as attractive or meaningful.

Lets say 20,000 'legitimate' people enter the competition and know all the answers without the need to resort to this thread. Each person's chance of winning the main prize would be 0.005%. Far less than 1% and therefore not much chance of winning to be fair.

Now, let's assume 100 'scoundrels' go on the moneysavingexpert forum and steal the answers and they then enter the competition. This alters the odds of winning the main prize to 0.0049751%.

So, by being friendly, helpful and good spirited the people who have contributed answers to this forum have effected their chances of winning the main prize by 0.00002%. This is therefore not as 'hugely significant' as you believe it to be and...somehow I think that those posting the answers will find a way to learn to live with the consequences of their actions;)

I think what i wrote you would call..'putting it in laymen terms'!!

while also i had quoted "and so on" as i didnt fancy spending all day listing calculations up till that point.

But on the other hand i credit the post, it is a valuable point and nice to see a thought response as opposed to the usual..."well dont come on here then"

all said one person is one more person that could win instead!!

If you dont want to see the answers then dont read this thread. This is getting ridiculous now. I understand the point about having less chance of winning it if everyone knows the answers but isn't that the point of this message board, to help others out? If everyone had that attitude then no answers to competitions would be put up here and it people wouldn't be able to enter half as many as they would spend ages looking for answers.

Stop being so selfish, and if you dont want to know the answers dont read the thread. Simple as. Supposed to be grown ups man, all this bickering is pathetic

....guess what the next clever sod writes!!

If you dont want to see the answers then dont read this thread!!

            genius!!

do you even read the threads or just jump on the band wagon?? or just inept?? i have no problem in seeing the answers, where did you get that from??? its everyone seeing the answers!!! its not difficult to undrestand!

as for the jibes about being grown up etc...i think youll find most people are just questioning, as i said in a previos post, why people do it! there has been no name calling etc...only by the people who have been very quick to get defensive!! something tells me these are the people that are struggling with the questions and need this forum to be able to have any chance!!
          7. Its not that most of us couldn't work the answers out. Its just that it takes more time to find the answers and we would therefore have less time to enter other competitions. If we share our answers we can all enter more competitions. Our motivation is to help each other and by doing so help ourselves.
