Has anyone got a recipe for a sausage casserole type recipe?
I've had a look in the indexed thread but can't use the sausage hotpot recipe as i don't know what smoked paprika is and i can't use the sausage hotpot recipe as it has cream of tomato soup in it (kids can't eat it as it has cream in it).

Smoked paprika is just that - paprika with a smokey taste. You can use it instead of Hungarian paprika but it is smokey - it costs about 1.50 a tin from a specialist deli. I wouls say that you could use tinned tomatoes instead of the tomato soup and substitute regualr paprika.0

Ziggi just substitute for normal Paprika, smoked is just to give a more.... well smokey flavour
and I would just use a tin of Passata ( seived tomatoes) instead of Tomato soup.
Cheers

Hi Zziggi,
There are lots of variations of sausage casserole on this thread:
Wanted - sausage casserole recipe!!
I make mine by browning sausages and onions in a pan, and pop them into the slow cooker. Then add tinned tomatoes, stock, peppers, mushrooms and a glug of wine if I have any. Add mixed herbs, black pepper, and garlic to taste and leave it to cook.
I've also done the same in a casserole dish in the oven if I need a quicker result.

Hi Zziggi
I'm assuming you were looking at my sausage hotpot recipe in the index from the ingredients you mention? Don't worry hun, you can use just normal paprika if you don't have the smoked variety. I ran out of that myself ages ago and have sinced used normal paprika with no problem, and sometimes vary it with a little cayenne pepper or chilli to give it a bit of kick, depending what base sauce I use
Also, the tomato soup I listed isn't actually "cream of tomato soup", although there's no reason it couldn't be used as a substitute I suppose, but was the Campbell's concentrate one which I don't believe contains cream, or at least the mediterranean tomato one (99% fat free I think) doesn't, which is the one I use often for this dish. Again, you can substitute it with something else of your choice such as tomatoes or passatta etc as mentioned above. I use the soups as it was a recipe idea I snaffled from Campbell's themselves off the side of the tin, but I only tend to have those in my storecupboard when they've been on offer so I generally use whatever I have to hand at the time.
Funnily enough I'm making it for dinner tonight, but I'm actually going to be using some V8 vegetable juice in place of the soup this time as I bought a few cartons when they were on offer a few weeks back but the boys aren't overly keen on them as a drink, and no way will I throw them out LOL! (They make excellent Bloody Mary's though :shhh: ... and was also used as the base sauce for my veggie lasagne which they loved  )
Hope that helps you out a bit hun, and remember - "no recipe is carved in stone" - to pinch a favourite quote from our lovely squeaks

Here's a smoked paprika cheat we've discovered - when a recipe calls for smoked paprika, we've taken to including one small Kabanos sausage, diced. It has all the smokey flavour of the paprika, basically because its one of the sausage's ingredients, plus all the extra rich flavours involved in a Kabanos.
Asda do a pack of four small Kabanos for just over £1, which seems expensive until you realise that you only need one and they keep (in the fridge) for ever! So that's 25p(ish) per recipe .. which isn't too bad for a touch of the exotic.
We've used it in Paprika Pork, Cowboy Beans, Chilli, Sausage Casserole and Beef Casserole. Lovely!!:hello: I'm very well, considering the state I'm in. :hello:Weight loss since 2 March 10 : 13lbs0 -
Tesco do smoked paprika in their own brand range of herbs/spices - in a jar- about same price as other spices0

Does anyone know where I can get decent sized tins of Smoked Paprika?
I get by with little 75gm tins from specialist shops/online, or tiny tins from Waitrose, Sainsburys etc. What I cannot find anywhere are the larger tins - the sort of tins Nigella is always dipping into! I guess they must be 150-250grm size.
Any thoughts anyone?0 -

Does it have a brand name on the tin? I could google it and see what turns up!0
