Getting rid of rats/mice (merged threads)

I had a problem with mice coming in from outside. My cat was having a great time mousing, but I was grossed out getting rid of the corpses! I bought one of the electronic devices from Lentek at Homebase about 6 months ago and I have only had 2 mice since-once when I unplugged it to hoover and forgot to plug it back in, and one a few nights ago when I moved a piece of furniture in front of it by accident. Presumably this blocked the signal.
All things considered, I am really pleased with it. Hope it works for you too.0 -
Hello WelshLamb
There is an existing 'getting rid of vermin' thread in the 'In my home' board, so I'll move your thread across to merge with it.;)
Hi, Martin’s asked me to post this in these circumstances: I’ve asked Board Guides to move threads if they’ll receive a better response elsewhere(please see this rule) so this post/thread has been moved to another board, where it should get more replies. If you have any questions about this policy please email abuse@moneysavingexpert.com.

Need a good solution as recently I had mices in the house and I think they are breeding big time  . Have already caught about 5 mices, 3 of the caches through sticky traps. I put spam and cakes on the sticky traps they don't work now as i think the mices have got wise.
Are the humane traps any good? I gather I dont want to hurt them but also tohave an effective cheap solution. What and where to get a cheap good one.
Thanks.0 -
I had mice when I lived in America. I bought one humane trap - plastic box with trap door that triggers when the mouse goes inside to get the food. Was advised there was probably a family of mice, caught one the first night, and another 2 more after that. It worked really well and we realeased them out on a neighbouring plot of land and we didnt get any more after that.“A budget is telling your money where to go instead of wondering where it went.” - Dave Ramsey0

wifey set traps in loft last night, three meeces dispatched today:T I swear i could hear them "river dancing" the other night.
Luckily the island has no rats at all,i think its down to the cats (feral and domestic)living on the "edge"0 -
we had a real problem with a rat last year:eek: we had 2 good catchers in the house will never know if it was one of the cats who origionally brought it in in the first place as a baby !!
We tried humanely first then traps but in hindsight should have called the rat man straight away .
In all the rat man was visiting everyother day in the end to try and catch it by that time apparently was the size of a small rabbit  !!!!!!!!!!
I cleaned under my tv and the footprints was on the dvd player in the dust it must have been watching me watching tv !!! I still cringe at the thought .
Another week and he was going to sit in our loft all night with a gun!!
According to our council rat man the cats weren't interested as cats will only go for a rat once and get bitten and not attempt it again .
We now have two dogs!!!
It took me a while to twig we had a visitor it was digging in my plants pots in the kitchen !!!
In the end over the 3 months it was in our house it ate through the fish tank wires trying to reach water , we could have had a fire !!
chewed a hole in the kitchen wall where it kept us awake all night running up and down the walls of the house and found its way from the loft into each floor throught crawling up the outside of the soil pipe .
It would be behind the kitchen units but too quick to get to it .
As hungry as the cats were they were interested in the noise but would not chase !!!
I was loosing it in the end and remember one day I sat with my feet up on the chair in the front room afraid to move having had no sleep for weeks until my hubby got home
I was afraid to turn the light off incase it ran out when I got up at night to go to the loo !!!!!
Poision was put down everywhere but the rat would not take it they do not like the trays they are put in sometimes it easier to sprinkle on the floor.
Eventually poisonous dust was brought in which apparently is hard to get hold off ?? which he threw down the soil pipe so as the rat pushed himself through it was so its coat and injested that way .
Eventually after scaring my 80year old neighbour with the fact we had a rat and I was convinced it was coming from her roof as I heard it jumping one evening when we went to bed she went white had to sit her down rat man sprinkle poision in her roof .
He went back a few days later and all the poison was gone must have tasted better in her house than mine!!!
The moral of this story is get help quick .
The council should be free.
They always say you are no more than 6 feet away from a rat .
good luck hope I havent scared you.

This might sound a slly question, but how do you know if you have rats or birds in you loft? I've got birds, which I want rid of, but reading this thread, I wonder if I've got rats as well!!
Can you have both?Nothing can compareTo when you roll the dice and swear your love's for me0 -
Any mice experts out there? I heard a noise the other day in the cavity wall and bought some poision from tescos - i put 50g down assuming that would be enough to kill anything. I came down in the morning and it had all gone to my surprise and found some droppings. Do they have large appetites? or are there likely to be serveal if that quantity has been eaten? I havent seen any yet but have just bought a trap so hopefully will catch one for breakfast.if i had known then what i know now0
