  • For anyone that is having problems with rats in places where you cannot use poisons, such as food factories and farms I would suggest these guys-

    http://www.combatrats.co.uk/

They will come and humainly shoot your rats.

  • Aaaargggghhhh! I think i have the same prob as you BRENDAB - how are you getting on?

I have never had any probs with droppings or seeing or hearing a mouse or rat, or we havent had any food being nibbled from cupboards or anything but we had the bad smell coming from under the floorboards. The smell is just about lingering but dieing off now (at least i hope it is). The massive prob is now we have had a few large flies today (i think 1 yesterday and 3 today). This is the only reason we have come to the conclusion of dead mouse. We have no way of getting under the flooring so cant even have a look.

Up until today we put the awful smell to the fact we recently had a burst pipe that moistened all of under our house - we thought it was the rising smell of the damp.

Im really worried now because i dont want an infestation or anything - im terrified of all things like that. i have a baby that crawls around so the flies are really bothering me. im sure we dont have any more mice because the dog is a terrier and loves to chase so she would deffinately let us know.

I will be getting a sonic plug in thing a.s.a.p now.

Has anyone had this senario happen before and please can you tell me what to expect as im petrified now.

Will the smell go and the flies dissapear or is this set to get worse?

We also have the same problem. :o My cat has caught 3 mice and the traps have caught 4.

I am considering buying a whole house repeller from Primrose London (Pestclear 2000) which comes with a money back guarantee if it doesn't work. Has anyone brought this item?

They also sell a cheaper version that doesn't work through walls . Perhaps this is what people who have been having problems with the sonic plug-ins have brought?

I use a classic trap, poisons werent an attractive proposition for me as they could die anywhere, I think the poison is an anticoagulant which means the poor thing bleeds to death internally when it bashes itself. At least the trap breaks their necks instantly.

I wouldn't trust that qvc gadget, having a mouse right under it might prove it's not fit for purpose!

The trap I got was from homebase, similar to a wooden one but made of plastic, baited with peanut butter, got them all.

I also didnt trust the "catch" ones that tilt and close when the mouse goes in, as they dont always work and I didn't want them just getting a free feed (although one did get a free feed when it's friend activated the trap first, it just ate the peanut butter anyhow. Probably lookin ginto it's dead compadre's eyes. gruesome!)

In closing then, the only way to go(if you want them dead) is the old fashioned trap. If you poison them they go off and die under the floor or in the wall, dead animals smell nasty.

All advice given by thekid is in good faith but remember these important facts:
    1. I'm lucky enough to live in Scotland(Scots Law may apply)...
    2. My motto is "What's the worst that can happen" you've seen the kids in the Comic Relief clips, is it to that scale? Then get a grip!
    3. It's only money...no really(see #2)
    4. I'm only a plumber...

    Hi,
I'm currently having my recently purchased house rewired and it is now apparent after lifing floorboards that there has been a significant rat presence in the past - there's evidence in the form of droppings, chewed wires and a long dead rat.
I'm therefore keen to do what it takes to clean-up under the floors while I can, and seek out and seal up routes of entry.
I know that poison and traps are an effective means to get rid of current populations, however I am more keen to prevent rats from living in my home in the first place.
My question is therefore - what evidence is there that the sonic and electromagnetic devices actually work; does anyone have success stories; and are there other products and methods I should be trying.
    Many thanks.

They say you are never more than 10 Yards away from a rat.

I would go along with ORMUS suggestion, or if you cannot do that I would put down a good supply of rat poison (under the floor boards where children and pets can not get hold of it). Then if the odd one came in they would not get established.
I used to be indecisive but now I am not sure.

    Thanks Ormus,

I have owned cats and a Jack Russel in the past and know them to be effective - they would regularly bring me furry presents; however as my wife and I both work full time we shouldn't be owning pets.
Also our house is next to a railway line and semi busy road so the cat would need more that the 9 lives.

I'm really looking for devices or products that would solve the problem.

    Many thanks.
