We were alarmed last summer to see a rat run across our patio area, the other side of our French windows. Then we saw another and realised we had at least a pair of them. We put down poison - those blue-dyed grains of corn - and could see them eating it. Didn't seem to put them off, but we kept refilling the pots and eventually they disappeared.
My wife found the first corpse under some leaves while gardening, but it took ages before I discovered the second - under the trampoline and very stiff. My wife bought what I thought was a rather expensive sonic device, which may or may not work, but luckily there was no evidence of them coming indoors. The funny thing is, after a while watching them outside through glass they didn't look nearly as scary! Though we had to work hard to distract our daughters' attention when we were all in the dining room and spotted the rats outside...0 -
Firstly check for access and block it with expanding foam and brillo/wire wool mix.
Then call the environmental health - they put warfarin traps down and they disappearAn average day in my life:hello: :mad: :coffee::coffee::coffee::T:rotfl: :rotfl:

help! we had rats last year but managed to figure out how they were getting access and blocked up all holes as well as putting down poison and buying one of those plug in things... it seems to have worked but now (im assuming because its getting warmer again) we have the dead rat smell back and i dont know what to do about getting rid of it!
we had last year after doing all of the above and i read if we couldnt find the dead rats then we'd just have to live with the smell until they decompose... but should the smell be coming back like this now? and how can i get rid of it?0 -
Help - I'm now too frightened to even look out of the window - my OH saw a rat in our garden today and I'm really upset. _pale_
We're in the middle of a load of other houses, so should I warn our neighbours or will we get blamed for feedling the birds? Do I have to tell the local council?
We hang seeds from trees and put items on a bird table but the birds are quite messy eaters. Have decided not to feed them for a few weeks now in the hope that there is only one rat and it will go away.
BTW, my dearest OH said it was a nice golden coloured rat (which didn't make me feel any better).0 -
People do say feeding the birds attracts rats. This was certainly the case in my father in law's gardentravelover0
