Getting rid of rats/mice (merged threads)

We have a few mice on the run in our flat, and the traps dont seem to be working too well.
We live in a flat above a fruit n veg shop, so I dont think they are actually living in a our flat (although not sure) but they come and have a scamper around every evening and the missus is going out of her mind (read: I am getting terrible ear ache as a result of these mice).
I have had a word with the owner of the shop downstairs but he claims he hasnt seen or heard any mice.
Does anyone have any advice for getting rid of these little blighters, I'm not keen on using poisons, but will if I have to.
Thanks0 -
Hello steve_r123
I've merged your thread with this existing thread. If you read from post #1 onwards, you should find lots of helpful advice to help you evict the mice.;)

most councils will treat rats and mice free of charge so try them first. It wont happen straight away every time the poison is taken it means the rodents are taking the bait. when the bait stays there they are probably goners!0

I noticed something was wrong when binbags left outside overnight would devlop smalls holes all over, then the following night heard a lot of rustling around in the kitchen.
I bought a mouse trap not knowing exactly what I would find in the morning.
After a week of being set off everynight with no catch I bought a Rentokill Professional Rat Trap from Homebase, similar to the wood and spring type but made out of hard haevy plastic and a powerful spring.
Peanut butter bait did nothing. As advised by an old friend i cooked a sausage in a frying pan left the fat to harden in the pan and bated the trap with it.
Sausage fat WOW, I caught over 10 huge rats in four days. They are very intelligent and I found moving the trap each time to different locations helped, but always at the edge of the room as the rat 'runs' they follow stick close to walls usually.
I do consider spring traps to be the most humane and efficient way of trapping, quick and hopefully painfree.
Also the council came round and layed poison which was eaten by what I think was the few remaining rats. The smell a few weeks later was unbearable and I managed to break the tenency due to the fact the flat wasn't fit for living.
Sausage fat and rat traps the fastest most pain free way :beer:0 -
Hiya
My mother has a cottage in the country, and she had the same problem until she got 3 sonic deterrents. I think hers were about the price you mention, but I don't know the name/brand. They are placed at different strategic parts of the house, and one of them is in the loft itself (it's converted with floorboards, wall plugs etc.). She has had no mice problems since she installed them 4 years ago, apart from the time we visited her with our cat: I turned them all of thinking it might effect the cat's hearing. We left, and she found a moose in the hoose two weeks later, and at the point I had to own up...
Hope that helps0 -
Poor you, mice are horribly difficult to get rid of. You might not be able to see where they are getting in because the hole(s) won't look obvious to you - mice are quite capable of squeezing through a gap of only 1cm. Take another good look around the outside of your house, and fill in even the smallest of holes that you can see.
Are your council coming back to dispose of any dead bodies now they have put poison down? If they are, get them to check location of mouse droppings - mice can be territorial little so-and-so's, and it might be that the poison isn't being put down in the areas they consider to be theirs, in which case it's unlikely they'll take the bait.
Trapping the mice probably won't make a huge impact on them, as they breed pretty quickly. Only other suggestions I can make are to remove any plants that grow up against your house, or near to it, and if you put food out for the birds, make sure you do it as far away from the house as possible.
Whereabouts in the house is you sonic trap set up, and what make is it?0 -

I have been round on Tuesday with my bucket of mortar and think all is sealed now.

The mouse man isn’t back till Nov 1st as I can’t get anymore time off till then and have nobody else to let him in, he told me they eat the poison and get thirsty so will die outside

They are chewing the pipes right over my bed so that’s where the boxes of poison are

I don’t feed the birds and cleared the sides of the house today.

The trap is a

It’s in the loft beside the “Chewing Area”. There are no sockets in my loft so it is on an extention lead and set to Random Pulse
Thanks for trying to help. They were terrible on Thursday night but a lot quiter last night.xxxdxxx

we either have rats or mice but not sure which, we have a device taht plugs into the mains and theres a button that if you press it it will emit a sound that apparently the furry things can only hear and they will go, but the device doenst seem to be working though, the furrballs are in the roof over the kitchen extension we have, i was thinking that they may be geeting in via the guttering, but not sure what to do if thats the case, we have had the council round to leave poison but that was a few years back,
anyone suggest something else to tryNo Links in Signature by site rules - MSE Forum Team 20 -
We've had some success with a humane trap
http://www.trapman.co.uk/mouse-traps.htm
This catches them by the family - apparently it can hold up to 20 mice. Mice tend to run along by the skirting board so it is best placed there near any droppings. We bait it with bits of chocolate and then drive the mice off a distance and let them go in a hedge. If you release them in your garden they will just find their way back in. You do need to check it every day otherwise it is not very humane as mice slowly starve to death.0 -
hi, we live in the countryside and sometimes get the occasional mice.
get a free kitten (or two) our cats are not allowed in the house but seem todo a fairly good job, although we see them with caught rabbits more than mice:rolleyes:living on the "edge"0
