Debate House Prices

In order to help keep the Forum a useful, safe and friendly place for our users, discussions around non MoneySaving matters are no longer permitted. This includes wider debates about general house prices, the economy and politics. As a result, we have taken the decision to keep this board permanently closed, but it remains viewable for users who may find some useful information in it. Thank you for your understanding.

Some people have said about a clique on here and they are right if your not in the clique and do something they dont agree with you get clobbered.

Pot, kettle, black. I seem to remember you were the instigator of a lot of that 'moving posts' issue, and all of a sudden when we said something negative about that, the board was flooded with all your mates with a trillion post counts, that we had never heard of coming to give you (((hugs))).

Martin did ask for alternative suggestions, here's mine:
Rename this thread: House Prices and the Economy Discussion area

It goes without saying that this includes discussing the recession and also makes it future proof if the recession ever ends!

Perhaps a better move would be setting a separate I hate Brown/Goodwin/We are all doomed/Tin foil hat/Water powered car/etc board, so the boring stuff can be moved there, leaving this board for more serious discussion?

The new tin-foil hat board could be called Mass Debate Tories perhaps?

First can Uncle Harry here make an appeal on behalf of the fair sex.

A well known poster confessed to me she would not go near the "doom & gloom" thread because of the certainty of being beaten up sooner or later.

It is nice to see SS is made of sterner stuff.

Last time this part of the forum was under threat, I had a conversation with NDG about the need for someone (like NDG) to be given the "guiding" role - the rest as they say is history.

We have not heard from Pastures on this thread (yet?). I once suggested to her that some threads were better suited to "The Arms" and got told that "The Arms" is not the natural Pastures territory (She put it a bit more strongly than that.)

Then we come to Divadee, I love her really but I just can't help it. Every time she posts, I think of the Home Secretary - So right thinking, so reasonable but so wrong.

As the world economy is now in uncharted waters, facing the worst man made disaster since WW2, we need somewhere to discuss the really big economic decisions that have the ability to turn our little world's upside down.
    [That is before we get to "Climate Change" which will change the world as we know it}

I'm off now to play with my bus pass before government cuts make it totally worthless.

Less personal abuse on this thread would be helpful, as it detracts from the point of the thread.

I'm sure there are people who come on MSE purely to bicker, but to make a decision based on their behaviour or views would be a sad neglect of the hundreds of regular users, not to say the tens or hundreds of thousands of less frequent or new users.

I think to ignore discussion of the most important, expensive things anyone will ever buy - houses - and shunt it off to the murkiest reaches of a moneysaving site seems very odd to me.

Surely, it should be right at the top?

    What could be more important?

The thing is it's not about winning, it's about making the boards good and useful. I am saying the splitting of them made them worse and less useful, not just for me but for most. I appreciate you do the job volunterily and it must p**s you off when people appear to criticise when you are trying to help. I am merely trying to help by asking you to look at the way you respond to people.

I really don't think this board is cliquey, it does get a bit personal sometimes and perhaps that's where you could improve it by trying to restrain some of the discussions that turn into personal battles - they add nothing to this forum other than personal victories to those involved. I agree though you would never satisfy everyone, goes with the territory unfortunately!

This, IMO, is an excellent post! :)

FWIW, I think we can be a little cliquey, int hat we have in jokes and mny of us form board friendships and sympathies. But I think these are the saving grace when it all goes haywire. I certainly don't think we are cliquier than some of he other boards.

For example, Treliac started a b'day post for me :o and it got moved to elsewhere (ok, I know despite me fearsome economic mind :rotfl:its OT) and a poster from elsewhere didn't know who I was, and said so, again, fair enough...but anyone whose racked up the embarrassing number of posts I have can expect to have a thread moved and find being asked 'who' they are kind of a relief, but funny. :) So- the point I'm getting to is that it felt kinda cliquey where ever it got moved to as well:)

Just to clarify this is not a proposal to merge the board it is simply to move it into the discussion & debate section of the site which is the Money Savers Arms. I have added a poll as requested

I think I was the first to vote on the poll and voted to leave it as it was but on refreshing the page it has change my vote so please scratch my vote.

Edit: Ignore. I think it must have been a 'refresh glitch'.

I think having board guides who are 'part' of the board would be really helpful. But very difficult. They can't manufacture interest, and |I'm not sure how many other volunteers there would be

I am a board guide on this forum, and I do read it a lot more threads on here than I post. I do have my personal opinion on things but it seems difficult to post them when there are is a clear clique on this board. It is made harder by the fact that everyone on here seems to have a dagger dug in deep towards the board guides.

The same threads rehashing the news stories in different guises and in the GIOL board, I would merge them but to do so here would incite an uproar so it gets left.
