Debate House Prices

In order to help keep the Forum a useful, safe and friendly place for our users, discussions around non MoneySaving matters are no longer permitted. This includes wider debates about general house prices, the economy and politics. As a result, we have taken the decision to keep this board permanently closed, but it remains viewable for users who may find some useful information in it. Thank you for your understanding.

Got this feeling that the discussion so far

    - where each of us is coming from

    - has helped Martin decide

    - where we are going to.

i just cant understand the problem really,

its like your favourite restaurant moving 10 shops along from where it is now.

would you stop going just cos it moved? its still the same restaurant and food etc... its just moved 10 shops away:rolleyes:

With the greatest respect its not your job to "understand the problem".

You can't ask for feedback (as Martin has) and then belittle those giving the type of feedback you disagree with. It may be wrong in your opinion but it is feedback all the same. Working in any kind of managerial capacity will teach you that. The staff (and you count in that role in this forum as a board guide) should be listening with an open mind for this feedback to have any value.

a quick look at dt and the arms and i know i wouldn't be posting if this thread had been there. it is full of complete trivia. whilst the banter on this board can be humourous and robust, it has an underlying element of seriousness that the arms with such debates as "towels or tampons" just doesn't convey.

i come here to escape the mundane chit chat around me rather than replicate it online.

a board called 'politics, economics and philosophy' would suit more. yes i know i'm a lofty idealist.

I think the quality of this board has reduced since the 'moved posts' debacle and the renaming. I think that moving it 'down the bottom' would only serve to make it degenerate further, if it did I think I would use this site much much less. I have always felt house prices and the wider economy are inextricably linked to all the areas in the pure money section and in many ways pull the section together. I spend about 80% of my time on this site on this board and most of the rest looking at other parts of pure money. I have also made major financial decisions partly because of the information on this board so it is important to me (these decisions have saved tens of thousands). I am sure Martin will do what he wants but I would find it a shame if seeking the views of the users of his forum (and it wouldn't be much fun without us) was just an exercise and that those views were then ignored.

Divadee, I am not a contraversial sort of a chap and don't like confrontation but I have to say your attitude does come over as highly superior and very belittleing. I think this was more the problem with the 'moved posts' situation than the moving of the posts. No doubt you will respond to me with warm recognition of your lack of tact and diplomacy.

To summarise: leave it where it is for very positive reasons.

my opions on here are mine and nothing to do with mse. i do not count as staff, i am not in any managerial capacity for this site whatsoever. we are still allowed our own opinions on here just as you are allowed yours.

The real MSE staff and abuse team are different kettles of fish all together. They have to follow rules and regulations.

you really cant win, i moved posts cos they were off topic and not about house prices, i get clobbered.

All the hoo-haa that followed enabled the posters here to get a board that enabled them to discuss wider economy issues as they requested after the incident. Now Martin has decided he MIGHT move the board, I offer my own personal opinion and i get clobbered.

As you are entitled to your opinion, i am entitled to mine, my opion has nothing to do with mse officially so i dont see what is wrong with what i posted.

Some people have said about a clique on here and they are right if your not in the clique and do something they dont agree with you get clobbered.

And you don't worry about the potential for people to view there being a conflict of interest? ...... or perhaps an opinion that your view may hold more weight with "the powers that be" because of your position?

This is the post of the day. Concise and hits the nail squarely on the head. Do I want to scroll down lists of utterly meaningless sh*t ? No. I agree with what someone else said, since the 'moving posts' issue a few months ago, quite a few of the more knowledgeable posters left, why bother moving posts ?, nobody reads them when they have been moved to the 'tampon or towel' board, and here is me thinking the board isn't moderated..

If it ain't broke, don't fix it. Although looking at Martin's thread starter, he as already made up his mind, and we are all just p*ssing in the wind.

I was directed to MSE, especially the housing related bits by a work mate who is in the same position as me, holding a decent deposit and waiting to see where the market will go. She told me that there was a lot of gems posted but that some of it was lost in the 'white noise'. When I asked her what she meant by that, she just told me to 'wait and see'. Obviously I know what she means now.

Surely, at some point everyone who logs on here came on for a reason, either for advice, information, or for some of the moneysaving tips. When did it all go wrong? Why come on here if it's not to either further your financial knowledge or to help people by passing on that knowledge? I guess I really just don't know why people feel they have to argue with strangers on an internet site that they must have originally come to in order to seek help from or provide aid to these same strangers.

As I have only recently discovered MSE and this board, I don't really have an opinion one way or the other on whether it's moved anywhere, but I went to Discussion Time once and it didn't leave a good impression on me. :)

The thing is it's not about winning, it's about making the boards good and useful. I am saying the splitting of them made them worse and less useful, not just for me but for most. I appreciate you do the job volunterily and it must p**s you off when people appear to criticise when you are trying to help. I am merely trying to help by asking you to look at the way you respond to people.

I really don't think this board is cliquey, it does get a bit personal sometimes and perhaps that's where you could improve it by trying to restrain some of the discussions that turn into personal battles - they add nothing to this forum other than personal victories to those involved. I agree though you would never satisfy everyone, goes with the territory unfortunately!
