  • Hello everyone, i've only just seen this thread but want to suggest something that may help some of you (apologies if it's already been suggested in earlier posts).

Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) is NICE guideline recommended for recurring/relapsing depression. It's an 8 week course, offered byt he NHS in association with local universities. I've recently attended a MB stress reduction course aimed at other chronic health/anxiety/stress etc and found it really really helpful.

here's a link on the Exeter course http://www.exeter.ac.uk/mooddisorders/acceptclinic/ and you can get your GP to refer you

I know of the top of my head that Oxford and Bangor have very good mindfulness centres, and i'm sure there are others I don't know about.

You can also access courses privately for about £150 for the 8 weeks.

There's loads of books and audio CDs I can recommend if helpful :)

Is there room for a small, house-trained Wolf here please?

I'm a long-time depression patient, been on anti-d's of one sort or another for the last four decades.

I'm disabled, and when my husband is at work, housebound. As a result, I usually go from one end of the day to the other without seeing or talking to a single soul.

I've no friends and am estranged from my family, so online friends are my best chance of any "social" contact.

    Best wishes to you all.

  • Hello everyone,

I suffer from deep depression and find it hard to motivate myself. I tend to spend a large part of the day in bed. What do you do to get motivated.

  • Lamewolf I am in same situation as you, when hubby is at work I rarely see anyone else due to disability stopping me going anywhere on my own. Family cannot come to terms with this so still expect me to go to them than other way round as I look the same so cannot be ill, not their mum who did everything always, very hard. When hubby goes away for his hobby usually two long weekends a year I might not see anyone the whole time.

My world now is on-line although not the best at keeping in touch as health problems mean I can go 'missing for a week or more' and like in RL people get miffed thinking you don't want to bother. Its just something I have learnt to accept.

Hugs and Love to you and everyone xxxx

Hi Rachel. You were asking about motivation. How to get yourself out of bed when you feel low.

One important thing is to do something. Or rather, do anything. It doesnt matter what it is. It could be opening the post. It could be putting your clothes in the laundry basket. Just do something.

Another thing is that action precedes motivation. We often think we have to find motivation to take action. We dont. You have to prime the pump - do some thing, anything and you will feel motivated to take further action.

A cbt exercise is to make a list of stuff you dont want to do or feel you cant do. Say why, then write a rational response to help you look at your negative thoughts more logically. Hth.
  • rachel, i struggle with motivation too, but i have found that doing something DOES make you feel better.
for a start i set my alarm for 8 or 9 am, i make myself get up, eat breakfast, get washed and dressed. even if i achieve little else during the day, at least i have achieved something, and thats a positive that makes me feel better.
i write lists of things i want to achieve, small things like put the laundry in the machine, make my bed, small achieveable things, that i am able to do, and if i dont get them done, dont get down, look at what you have achieved that day and tommorrow do something else from the list.
lamewolf and prepareathome, i have disability issues also, except i live at home alone, and at 41 i'm the youngest in the sheltered housing complex where i live, so no friends my own age locally.
    hugs to all

There's another thread here https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/2998286 called Coping with Depression

Please forgive me if my comments seem abrupt or my questions have obvious answers, I have a mental health condition which affects my ability to see things as others might.

I have no option but to get up when Mr LW does, as I need assistance with bathing and dressing.;) I refuse to not dress, as to me that would be the top of the slippery slope. He's very good, too, no matter how much I don't want to bother, he always sees that I'm bathed, dressed and reasonably presentable before he leaves for work.:A

I've joined the Flylady thread on the Old Style board on MSE to motivate me to do my housework (there's nothing like knowing a couple of hundred ladies are also scrubbing the loo at the same time to make it less of a chore!):D and I'm also a host for a dog-sitting service, so when I have a canine guest staying, I have to tend to their needs. I don't always have dogs staying, but when I do, it's much easier to get going.:o
